H: CP 3 ZZC few DAV Chapter Many letters from station hos pitals in Japan have been re ceived by Arch L. Brewster, commander of Salem chapter No. 6, Disabled American Vet erans, in appreciation of maga zines sent by the chapter to the hospitals. The letters were received through the Red Cross. Excerpts1 from some of them are: "On behalf of the patients of this hospital we would like to extend to you their thanks and ours for the nice selection of magazines your chapter recent ly mailed to this hospital." "These magazines were imme diately distributed to all bed patients and also left in our rec reation room where they were available to the ambulatory pa tients." The final result may spread well beyond the borders of Red China, and in fact become world-wide. 5 ' A The news must have sent a shiver of apprehension through Hong Kong, the British crown Colony standing at the gateway to China. i It must have caused serious discussion in Tokyo where it Would be realized that the di version of British commercial energies from China would give the Japanese serious competi tion in the markets of Thialand Indo-China, Indonesia, Burma and India. It must have brought a grim victory smile in Moscow and Peiping. Conversely, it could bring brat even closer cooperation peTween the United States and Britain in Asia. s In Britain itself, it could fore shadow an even greater cleav age between the conservative forces of Prime Minister Win ston Churchill and the left-wing laborites led by Aneurin Bevan Who have favored close rela tions with the communist countries. At any rate, British business has found out the hard way that a free enterprise system cannot Operate under communist rules. . . , , So the British will salvage What they can and get out, abandoning 100 years of effort. 8 What they get out with won't be much. i The communists have another aeat system for taking over whatever is left after their con fiscatory taxes. i They will demand virtual ranson for the release of some 700 or so Britons still remaining insme China. , The ransom will come in the form of fines for various "viola tions" such as tax evasion, fail ure to declare assets, or illegal Sales, or in demands for vast Bums to be paid former em ployes. . , Two considerations undoubt edly gave the British business- Ijmcn reason finally for accept- H.Wft their hard decision.
