12 Capital Journal, Salem, Ore., Wednesday, May 21, 1952 , Morse Justifies Position on Steel Seizure by Flaying Press Washington (U.R) Sen. Morse (R.-Ore.) said Tuesday, national reporting of the steel dispute ig nored "the seriousness of the sit uation" when President Truman sized the steel Industry and con centrated instead on "the poli tical overtones." Morse, who has backed up the seizure from the start, said he considers this "one of the saddest failures of American journalism In my recollection." He added: "In this Instance, I think the press, radio and television failed to meet their public trust. They are all tarred with the same brush." Morse made his comments at a Senate Labor subcommittee's hearings on a bill he Is sponsor ing to authorize seizure of de fense plants. Sen. Humphrey (D. - Minn.) was the only other senator pres ent and he chimed in with some eomments of his own. Humphrey said he had been "shocked and amazed" because he had not seen any newspaper account of testimony Secretary of Defense Lovett gave to this sub-committee on April 24 about the importance of steel to de fense. The Associated Press quoted Lovett on that date as saying any prolonged stoppage of steel pro duction "could result in tragedy and disaster"; that "a sudden and large-scale resumption of combat in Korea may occur at any time," and that he did not see how any President "in a cri tical time such as this could al low a major stoppage of steel" but that the Defense Department had no opinion on the methods Truman used. Lovett was quoted in a general AP story on the steel situation. The story was widely published by AP member newspapers.
