The engagement of the couple wai announced at Christmas time. The ceremony will be solem nized at 8 o'clock in the eve ning In the First Congregational church, Dr. Brooks Moore of the First Methodist church officiat ing. Carroll Graber is to be soloist, Jean Hobson Rich play ing the organ. Lighting the candles will be Miss Gene Belshaw and Miss Janet Wheeler, both of Port land, Chi Omega sorority sisters of the bride-elect. Miss Glenda McAllister, also sorority sister, will be honor attendant for the bride. William Gilbert, now station ed with the air firce at Spokane, will be best man for his broth er. The ushers will be Dcrrell Crossler, brother of the bride, and Chris Wheeler. The reception following also is to be at the church. Miss Crossler is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Crossler. Mr. Gilbert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Gilbert of Al buquerque, N.M. He has been with the army engineers at Bonneville. Luncheon Event Hostess at a luncheon on Sat urday will be Mrs. Clark C. McCall, entertaining at her home in compliment to Mrs. M. K. Smith of Philadelphia, who is visiting in Woodburn at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Gerald Smith, and Mrs. J. F. Lacey of Woodburn who is observing her birthday that day. A group of eight has been bidden. Mrs. H. D. Miller, Woodburn, will assist Mrs. McCall. 2 Entertain for Shower and Party Mrs. Thomas G. Meier and Mrs. E. J. Boust honored Mrs. Donald Crossland on Wednes day night with a shower at the Meier home. A late supper was served and games played dur ing the evening. Guests present were Mrs. Robert Grlesenauer, Mrs. John Griesenauer, Mrs. Robert Blan chet, Gervais; Mrs. Tony Grle senauer, Mt. Angel; Mrs. Wil liam Syron, Silverton; Mrs. Ralph Carver, Mrs. Ruth Raines, Mrs. Katheryn Rue, Mrs. H. H. Conover, Mrs. Harold Brown, Mrs. Clyde Cardy, Mrs. E. Vester, Mrs. R. J. Chance and Mrs. Brad Burk land. HOME from a trip south are Mr. and Mrs. Donald C. Roberts. They were in San Francisco a few days and in Hayward to visit their son-in-law and daugh ter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Miles. The Salem folk also were at Carmel, Mrs. Roberts remaining there while Mr. Rob erts went on a business trip to Chicago. In CORVALLIS Friday and Saturday evening for the west em regional basketball playoffs of the National College Athletic association will be Mr, and Mrs. Vernon Perry and Mr. and Mrs. Lorlng Schmidt. WOODBURN Members of the local unit of the W.C.T.U. will meet at the home of Mrs. John Carson at 2 p.m. on Fri day, March 28, instead of the regular date, Friday the 21. Postponement of the meeting was necessary because of the Marion county institute at Snlcm on March 21. Today's Menu Snturdny Lunch Spanish Rice with Crisp Bacon Salad Bowl Bread and Butter Surprise Dessert Beverage Surprise Dessert Ingredients: 1 cup water, 1 package lemon-flavored gela tin. 1 cup apricot syrup (from canned apricots), 1 No. 2 Hi can whole unpceled apricots, h cup chunk-style peanut butler, Vi cup chopped dates, 1 tablespoon lemon Juice, 2 tablespoons apri cot syrup. Method: Put water in a sauce pan and bring to boil; add grin- tin and stir until dissolved. Stir in well 1 cup apricot syrup; chill until partially set. Mean while remove pits from apricots In a small bowl, mix peanut butter, dates, lemon juice, and 2 tablespoons apricot syrup. Fill the cavity of each apricot with peanut butter mixture, pressing halves together so fruit retains its whole appearance. Put 1 filled apricot into each lndi vidual mold. Then fill molds with gelatin and chill until firm. Unmold before serving if desired. Makes 6 to 8 servings, To Be Visitor Mrs. Euga A. Campbell, above, national president of the American Le gion auxiliary, will be a visit or in Salem next Thursday, March 27. A luncheon in her honor will be given at the American Legion club at 12:30 o'clock that day, those attending to include auxiliary members of the thre local units and from units in dis tricts No. 2 and No. 8. Mrs. Campbell is from Homer, Louisiana. Miss Cummings Visits Between Engagements Miss Lucile Cummings, Sa lem's well known vocalist, is home for a short vacation vis iting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Cummings. She will be here until March 29. Miss Cummings is on concert tour, having made several ap pearances in the midwest be fore coming to Salem. On March 31 she will give a con cert in Spokane, then will head back to New York Clly, singing at several stops in the midwest en route. On May 26, Miss Cummings will sing again over the Tele phone Hour on the radio. She has sung onthis program sev eral times during the past few years, her last appearance hav ing been in February. 2 Give Party Mrs. E. M. Page and Mrs. George W. Croisan were host esses this afternoon at a lunch eon find party at the Page home, the group giving a shower for Miss Barbara Compton, who Is to be mnrried in the early sum mer to Elmer Ellsworth Smith, Jr. Guests included close friends of the bride-elect's mother, Mrs. Henry V. Compton. Next month, Mr. and Mrs. Compton will go south to visit their daughter in San Francisco and the gifts from the shower will be taken to Miss Compton then. Talks to Group Mrs. Stanley Butler spoke on child craft Wednesday night at the meeting of the Young Ma trons club. She showed differ ent activities to help the child develop. Guests were Mrs. Glenn Wis- ser, Mrs. Larry Gooley and Mrs. Wayne Domes. Mrs. Donald Meyers was ap pointed to be in charge of the Care packages for the year. The decorations were all In yellow. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Hubert Harris, Mrs. Nornn Ling and Mrs. John Van Osdol. Junior Women Woodburn Members of the Junior Woman's club sponsor ed a St. Patrick's party Wednes day night at the home of Mrs, Lois Gaviola with Mrs. Lloyd Froom nnd Mrs. Walter Scar borough, Jr., as co-hostesses. Games were played with prizes going to Mrs. Joe Sowa. Mrs. Lloyd Froom and Mrs. Harold Eichsteadt. Plans were discussed for the quet which hns been tentatively set for April 16 at the Episcopal hall with members of the Epis copal guild serving the banquet. Refreshments were served by the hostesses. The monthly business meet ing will be held April 2 at the library club room with Mrs. Harold Schlel as program chair man and Mrs. Joe Walker, Jr., as hostess. It exert ft xeiuarkAblj Miming ajiaot on the Miss Dalke Wed Here Thursday Wed last evening at a service in the First Christian church were Miss Irene Marie Dalke, Seattle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dalke of Salem, and John Henry Freese, Jr., USN, son of Mrs. and Mrs. John H. Freese of Baltimore, Mary land. The T o'clock ceremony was performed by the Rev. John Franz, who also officiated at the wedding of the bride's par ents, 30 years ago. White and lavender stock dec orated the church front for the wedding and down the proces sional aisle were candles at the pews. For the music, Sol Ediger of Dallas, uncle of the bride, sang, William Fawk playing the organ. In White Satin Mr. Dalke gave his daughter In marriage. The bridal gown of white satin was designed with marquisette yoke bordered with Venetian lace, inserts of the lace also trimming the skirt. A row of buttons ex-, tended down the back of the dress, the long sleeves were pointed over the wrists and the skirt extended into a long train. The fingertip veil edged in lace was arranged from a coronet of pearlized orange blossoms. The bride carried a white orchid on a Bible. Mrs. Herb Dalke was matron of honor for her sister-in-law. She wore a lavender taffeta gown designed with wide bertha collar, and her flowers were a fan arrangement of while baby orchids centered with a large purple orchid. Mrs. Harold Dalke, Mrs. Ev erett Schirman of Portland and Mrs. Jack Eyklebosch, also of Portland, were the bridesmaids. They wore lavender frocks, like that of the matron of honor, and their flowers were the fan ar rangements of the white van das with purple orchid in the center. Niece is Flower Girl Barbara Dalke, niece of the bride, was flower girl, her frock and flowers matching those of the other attendants. Harold Dalke was best man and ushering were Herb Dalke, Marvin Dalke and Clarence Harder. For her daughter's wedding, Mrs. Dalke wore a blue import ed Chantilly lace gown with corsage of blue and white or chids. The reception also was at the church. Mrs. Clarence Harder cut the cake. Pouring were Mrs. Pete Ediger of Dayton and Mrs. Henry Ediger of Dallas. Assist ing were Misses Lucille Ediger, Mabel Zimmerman, Roberta Roberts, Mrs. William Fawk, Mrs. Russell Derksen and Mrs. Grover Welty. The bride's table was decorated In lavender and white flowers and candles. For going away the bride wore a gray suit with pink coat, pink and navy straw hat, navy accessories and a corsage of white orchids. Following a trip to San Fran cisco the couple will be at home in Seattle, after April 1. Entertains Group Mrs. A. J. Cleveland of Dallas and Mrs. C. M. Hixson were hostesses to the American War Mother's club on Tuesday at the home of the latter in honor of Mrs. Caroline Hixson, who was celebrating her 92nd birthday. Assisting on the committee were Mrs. Martin Viesko and Mrs. Jessie Lytle. Thirty members and friends were present. Cards, gifts and a bouquet of carnations from the chapter were presented the honor guest. Her daughter, Mrs. Cleveland sang two numbers accompanied by Mrs. Glenn Prather. A reading was given by Mrs. Rose Hagedorn. A no-host lun cheon was served at noon. Others with March birthdays recognized were Mrs. Sarah Pe terson, Mrs. R. L. Goss. Mrs. Mary Mann, Mis. J. A. Haugen went to Mcdford Tuesday to greet a new grand son, born to her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Strobel (Yvonne Haugen). There is another son in the family, Steven, four yean of age. Johnston, above, has, been named the state presi dent for the Oregon Society of Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America for a three-year term. Mrs. Jack Simkins, first vice president, presided. Guests were Mrs. Muriel Ha gen, Mrs. Augusta Allport, Mrs. W. E. Noll. The picture "Palmour Street" was shown by Wade Patterson. It dealt with family life. Community service commit tee was in charge of the re freshments. Mrs. Kenneth Deca tur is chairman and she was assisted at the meeting by Mrs. Dow Lovell, Mrs. Clarence Cox and Mrs. Sam Harbison. Couple Wed In Alaska A wedding of interest to friends here took place in the chapel at Ladd Field, Fairbanks, Alaska on Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. when Miss Norma Jane Bowder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bowder, was married to Pfc. Glen A. Wagers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wagers, all of Salem, in a double ring cere mony, the army chaplain officiat ing. Music was furnished by army personnel on a regular field or gan. For her wedding the bride wore a full gathered ankle length! dress of white lace and satin and a shoulder length veil trim med with pearls. Her bouquet was white gladioluses and roses. She was given in marriage by Richard Dickerson. The bridesmaid, Mrs. Carlton Smith, wore a full gathered an kle length dress of pink pique and carried a bouquet of blue baby irises. Mr. Wagers was attended by Pfc. Messmore, of Ladd Field. Following the service a recep tion was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dickerson. Gangware was reelected president of the Salem League of Women Voters at the annual election meeting Thurs day night at the home of Mrs. Hal DeSart. Mrs. Jason Lee was elected vice president and Mrs. Gordon Shattuck and Mrs. E. M. Corri gan were reelected secretary and treasurer respectively. Mrs. E. C. Wetherby is the financial chairman and Miss Eloise Ebert is the resources chairman and Mrs. Ralph Wyckoff was elect ed unit chairman. Mrs. Arthur Bone and Miss Gertrude Acheson were elected to the nominating committee for 1953. Council Meets Several speakers were present Thursday-afternoon to talk be fore the Salem Council of Wom en's organization. The group met at the city library. Mrs. James T. Brand talked on the need for a YWCA. She gave several ideas for'groups to raise money. It was stressed that the girls need a place to meet; Mrs. Harry Sappenfield spoke on parliamentary procedure for conducting a business meeting. Connell Ward, clerk for the Sa lem public schools, spoke on the forthcoming school issues to be voted on. Shower Given Accent club members were entertained at a party given Thursday evening in honor of Mrs. Odum Slattum. Mrs. Robert Pickeral, Mrs. Donald Addison and Mrs. Man- ford Anson were hostesses for the party at the North Lancas ter drive home of Mrs. Pickeral.
