Capital Edited by MARIAN 6 Capital Journal, Salem, Miss Proctor Mr. Stearns To Wed Soon A wedding of early February will be that of Miss Diane Proc tor of Salem and Douglas How ard Stearns of Portland. The ceremony is planned for Saturday afternoon, February 2, the 4 o'clock service to be in the First Methodist church in Port land. Only members of the fam ily and a few- close friends will be present for the wedding. The engagement of the couple was announced last year. Miss Proctor, a graduate of Willamette university, where he is a member of Pi Beta Phi, is the daughter of Mrs. Blanche Proctor of Salem. She is teach ing In Salem this year. Mr. Stearns, son of Dr. and Mrs. Howard Stearns of Port land, also was graduated from Willamette, being a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity on the campus. He is now doing grad uate work at University of Ore gon. Missionary Group Reports Installation Silverton Eighty members of the Immanuel Lutheran Wom an's Missionary federation at tended the recent evening meet ing at the parish fireside room. Mrs. Arnold W. Nelson present ed the program, "Paul's Conver iion." Vocal music was given by a trio, Mrs. John Lalicker, Mrs. Kenneth Webb and Mrs. Craig Clark. Mrs. Tom Ander son led in group singing of hymns. Rev. Arnold W. Nelson pre sided at the installation cere monies and installed, as presi dent, Mrs. C. A. Surprise Event About 40 friends gathered at the Bruce Williams home Satur day evening as a surprise for Mr. Williams on his birthday an niversary. Mr. and Mrs. Williams are leaving next week on a plane trip to Acapulco, Mexico, Dallas, Texas, New Orleans and Okla homa, visiting Mrs. Williams family at the latter place. They plan to be gone about a month FROM OAKLAND, Calif., comes announcement of the birth of a son on January 19 to Lt. and Mrs. Orville J. Sparrow The baby is the second child, were being a little girl, Lise Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs William Sparrow of Salem and Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Morton of Oakland. Lt. Sparrow left r eently for duty In Korea. Both he and Mrs. Sparrow attended Willamette university. (Artz studio pic ture) Budd-Murphy Rites Jan. 18 at Hubbard Hubbard Ruby Louise Mur phy of Aurora, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Frank Zosel of Forest Grove, and Ewing John Budd, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Mann of Hubbard, were married Fri day evening, January 18, by Rev. E. H. Hastings, in the study of his home in Hubbard. The bridegroom's parents were attendants. Only others present for the ceremony were Mr. and Mrs. George Zelinka, brother-in-law and sister of the bride, from Aurora. The bride wore a dressmaker suit of black and gray and a white camellia corsage. A small reception followed the wedding at the home of the bridegroom's parents. The couple will live in the Broadacres area. Mr. Budd is employed at the Detroit dam. Matthews-Johnson Willamina Local residents have learned of the wedding of a former resident, Miss Carolcc Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johnson of McMinn ville, and Arthur E. Matthews, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mat thews of Roseburg. The service was on December 23 at the First Baptist church in McMinnville, Rev. Elton E. Smith performed the double ring ceremony. Before the ceremony, the candles were lighted by Miss Joanne Frink and Miss Priscilla Tennis of McMinnville Dale Johnson of Carlton, sang, ac companied at the organ by Har old Elkinton. Mrs. Glenn Tucker of McMinn ville was matron of honor for her cousin. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Richard Buswell of Rose burg, sister of the bridegroom Miss Rena Tolivcr, Miss Louise Van Hine and Mrs. Bobbie Col lins, all of McMinnville. Richard Buswell of Roseburg was best man and ushers were Robert Johnson of McMinnville, and Lt. Kenneth C. Johnson of Camp Pendleton, Calif., broth ers of the bride, and Donald Kruse and Oliver Allen of Rose burg. After the ceremony, a recep tion was held. Aunts of the bride assisting were Mrs. E. W. Job's Daughters Planning Ski Trip Bethel No. 43, Job's Daugh ters, is planning a ski trip on February 9. Plans for the affair were made at the meeting of the bethel on Saturday. Honored and escorted were Mrs. Ira Mix, guardian, bethel No. 34, Monmouth-Independence. Mrs. Harry Lucas, worthy matron, Salem chapter, Order of Eastern Star. The group will meet again on February 1. Hostess to Club Salem Heights Mrs. Harold Patterson was hostess to the Friendly Neighbors Garden club last week at her home on Peck avenue. Mrs. Roy Sagert as sisted the hostess. Mrs. William Hall conducted a short business meeting and Mrs. Donald Dawson was wel comed into the club as a new member. Mrs. R. H. Clark pre sented her with a corsage. Mrs. R. H. Clark reported on the Garden club council. Mrs. William Hall was the pro gram chairman, and the evening was spent in viewing colored films of Hawaii. Program Planned Several acts have been plan ned for entertainment for the Hi-Y-Tri-Y "Parents Potluck' tonight at 6 o'clock at the high school cafeteria. Rob Riggs will be the master of ceremonies. Miss Sue Con rad will sing and Larry Springer and Bob Payne will give several pantomimes. Dick Myers will give a reading. Relay races are on the program for everyone. The decorations will have a winter theme and colors used will be blue and white. AMONG SALEM folk in the south are Mrs. Harry U.
