Mrs. Kay McCarty reported for the arts and crafts committee that additional saies had been made since the recent bazaar which had increased the profits to the sum of $381.41. A vote of thanks was given Floyd Volkel who donated $25 to the fund raised to complete the community house. Gifts were exchanged by the members and refreshments were served by the hostesses, Mrs Gerald Heath and Mrs. Elmer Stewart to Mesdames W. R Hutcheson, Laura Joaquin, W S. Hudson, Norman Garrison, Joe Joaquin, Edward Chance, Glen Hearing, Howard Means, Walter Thomas, Arthur Findley, Gwen Schaer, Robert Levon, A. T. Barnhardt. Kay McCarty, Albert Millsap and two new members welcomed into the club, Mrs. Verner Evans and Mrs. K. W. Martlg. Don Milcy, school principal, reports the students making the honor roll for the second six weeks period are: seniors, Lo rens Devine and Maxlne Schroe der; juniors, Joan Ryal and Betty Tucker; sophomores, Ella Mae Drew and Jerry Larson; freshmen, Joan Barnhardt, Ed die Butler, Dolores Lantz, Patty Stewart, Allan Vail and Verna Yawn; eighth grade, Charles Khulman, David Moore and Royal- Schaer; seventh grade, Donnalee Oliver. Work on the new firehouse has been started by a group of volunteer workers. The build ing will be two stories, with a meeting place for the volunteer firemen on the second floor. A hot dish luncheon was served at the home of Mrs. Joe Joaquin at 1 o'clock by their wives. Among those donating their services to erect the house were Joe Bowes, Dan Morrison, Bob Oliver, A. T. Barnhardt, Ed Kadine, Glen Hearing, Bill Pen nick, Oswald Hirte, Ray Lord and Joe Joaquin. Mrs. Joe Joaquin entertained complimenting her daughter, Darlene, who was 10 years old Sunday. A number of Darlene's schoolmates were Invited to help her observe the occasion. Party games, the opening of gifts and refreshments provided entertainment. Present were Marcia Barnhardt, Charlene and Cheryl Evans, Connie Stewart, Roberta Chance, Cheryl and Sharron Hirte, Joan Hull, Shar- ron Hearing, Sherry Shiner. Janice Young and Connie St. Clair. Unionvale "Thinking Out Loud" is the title of a 35-page booklet ot original poems composed by Yamhill county superintcndenl of schools, D. Lynn Gubser, which was received by many local residents Tuesday from Mr. and Mrs. D. Lynn Gubser foi Christmas greetings. Pfc. Edward E. Clevenger. son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward E. Clevenger of Unionvale, is re ported prisoner of war of com munist camp near the Yalu riv er in the Korean war zone. A very small gathering of members of the Unionvale Evan gelical United Brethren church W. S. W. S. Christmas party held at the church Tuesday. First flurry of snow reported lor this district this season came at dusk Tucday, and melted al most as fast as it fell. Mr. and Mrs. Mason Demaroy of San Diego, Cal., came to take her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. M Coats, home with them for sev eral months visit. Demarays were overnight guests of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hilderbrand, at Albany. Mrs. Louis W. Magee under went surgery at Emanuel hos pital, Portland, Wednesday and is reported recovering satisfac torily. He has two brothers, Dennie and Michael. Grandparents are Wil liam Peyree of Independence, and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Smith of Carthage, Iil. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Carey and family of Woodland, Wash were overnight guests of his mother, Mrs. C. L. Carey re cently. Elton Hall of Tillamook spent several days last week visiting with his sister, Mrs. Elva Grover and daughter, Shirley, i Mr. and Mrs. Herb Thurston received word of the birth of twin granddaughters born to Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Thurston, Memphis, Tenn., Sunday, De cember 9. Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Cobine entertained with a family din ner last Sunday in honor of Mrs. Bob Cobine's birthday. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Orville Winn and son, Terry of Albany; Mr and Mrs. James Cobine and two sons, Mrs. Evelyn Lane and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Cobine. Mrs. John Penrose of Coulee City, Wash., spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stone and other rela tives. Mr. and Mrs. Ham Jones are now at home, having returned from Mitchell where they have been living for the past several months. They expect to be here until the spring, at least. Miss Patsy Perkins of Los Angeles, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Perkins, is at home for the Christmas holi days. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Howard recently visited their two daughters and other relatives and friends in Independence Iowa, and have returned home Marshall Powell, manager of the local J .C. Penney store, en tertained the store employes at the annual Christmas dinner party at Day's cafe in Mon mouth. Mrs. Nellie McLeod, aunt of Mrs. Clarence Ritchey, is now at a nursinc home in Monmouth. Mrs. McLeod has been in the Salem General hospital for several weeks suffering from a broken hip. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Weav er are the parents of a son born at the Salem General Monday, Dec. 10. Willamina Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Knudson and Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Aase were guests for dinner this week at the Joe Aase home in nonor of the ladies' birthdays. I Mr. and Mrs. Howard Nice visited Clayton Wolfer at the Good Samaritan hospital in Portland this week. Mr. and Mrs. John Westwang and family spent last week vis iting in Coos Bay and Gold Beach with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. A. Hanson were hosts for a birthday and anni versary dinner this week honor ing Mr. and Mrs. Dave Paine. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Connie Castro and Mr. and Mrs. Walt Whipple. The occasion was also Mr. Hanson's birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Connick received word this week of the death of Mrs. James D. Cole man of Tillamook, a former neighbor here of the Connick's. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Spencer of Monmouth, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Huss of Fairbury, Neb., and Mrs. Nellie B. Spencer were guests at the E. A. Spencer home this week. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Carpenter and Mr. and Mrs. V. C. Neal spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Dnhl in Long view, Wash. Mrs. Karl Franklin visited her sister, Mrs. C. D. Hatfield in Salem, Bob Mode returned home Monday from the General hos pital where he had been con fined with pneumonia. Diane Ellingsworth arrived home Wednesday for Christmas vacation from OSC. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Stone and Mr. and Mrs. Orlcy Brock at tended an outboard meeting and Christmas party in Portland Saturday evening. Ballston Mrs. John Hofson suffered a paralytic stroke last week and is a patient at the McMinnville hos pital. Dee Mellema and Edd Miller have returned from the McMinn ville hospital and are recovering. Helen Small suffered a se verely sprained ankle in a fall at her home this week. She was taken to McMinnville for med ical attention. Oakley is a former Scio boy (Lower photo by Albany-Democrat-Herald) Amity Rebekah Lodge Has Regular Meeting Amity Industry Rebekah lodge elected Mrs. Beatrice Hei nonen and Herman Brutke to membership by initiation Tues day. They will be initiated Jan. 24. The noble grand announced that the' first regular meeting, Jan. 1, will be held to make preparation for installation of officers Jan. 8. Committees were appointed. District convention of Re bekah lodge, No. 15, is sched uled for Jan. 26 at Lafayette. A representative of the local lodge will participate in a rit ualistic contest, and members from the lodge will also serve on the courtesy and thanks com mittees. Members reported ill were Hazel Burch, Amity, and Elizabeth Wood, McMinnville, a former member. Following the lodge session a Christmas party was held. Mrs. Rose Wood, vice grand, assisted by several children, found gifts under the lovely Christmas tree for everyone. Cake, candy, spices nuts, cider and coffee were served in the dining room. Mrs. Harrington Hurt n Monday Collision Lebanon Mrs. Robert Har rington, 75 Mary street, is in the Lebanon hospital with in juries inflicted Monday night when the car in which she was riding with her husband struck a train at the Tangent street crossing. According to investigators, Harrington said he sighted the train in ample time to stop, but when he applied his brakes they failed to hold. Mrs. Harrington, suffering from numerous body injuries and shock, was taken to the hos pital by Huston ambulance. Shepherd will have charge of purchasing the treats. Mrs. Leon Hilton, Mrs. Fred Wallace and Mrs. Buell Judson will have charge of the refresh ment committee. West Stayton school had two award winners on the "Land of Make Believe" program Mon day. Mrs. Janet Brownell's first grade pupil, Rose Ann Henrik son, won top honors. LaVerne Feres, fifth grade pupil, was al so an award winner. This pro gram is heard over KOAC at 1:15 p.m. Monday. Author Speaker Hubbard Mrs. A. Christmas Scene Lighted Wheatland Christmas deco rative electric lighting in the Christ Child manger scene and a decorated Christmas tree were completed Thursday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Ignatius Bachmeier of Salem is among nine men from Oregon aboard a troop transport due to arrive today in Seattle from the Far East with 1199 ar my men aboard, says the Asso ciated Press. Also on the ship will be Cpl. Orin R. Cook of Dallas. Originally scheduled to arrive Thursday, the ship was delayed by bad weather at sea.
