Exhibit to Open The one man show of works of For rest Evans of Mosier will be on display in the R. L. Elfstrom art gallery for three weeks beginning Monday, July 30. His works consist of life portraits in oil, pastel and crayon, landscapes in oil, water color, pen and ink, flowers in oil and cartoons in pen and ink. Mr. Evans' art education began at the University of Oregon in 1925, but his schooling was interrupted when be re turned to Mosier to work on his father's farm. He continued to paint while growing prize apples until 1936. From 1936 until 1941 his time was divided between caring for the ranch and fur thering his studies in music and painting portraits in Los Angeles, Calif. In i941 he was inducted into the U.S. army and along with his duties he found time to continue his painting, depicting army life and the lighter side of war. A fiw of his army sketches are included in the jhow. An exhibit In Australia merit ed favorable comment from army per sonnel as well as civilians. The exhibit, along with the sketches and portraits made while overseas, in cludes a portrait of Kay' Francis painted in Los Angeles, a series of Oregon wild flower pictures. and a portrait of an In dian chief. Girls from Salem who will attend Girl Scout camp at Smith Creek for the week of July 23 to 29 will be Misses Joyce o I fi Brant, Joan t-ulbcrtson, Carol Rae Hof- ine, Dona McCue, Betty McCue, Denis Miller, Janice Shrake and Linda Lee Zehner. There are still several vacancies for the two-week session which begins Au gust 7 and continues until August 20. Camp director is Miss Dorothy Wilson, field director of the Santiam area coun cil; business manager and dietitian, Miss Joyce Cropp of Seattle, Wash.; water front director, Miss Peggy Boyce of Prineville; assistant waterfront director, Miss Iva Jean Schuttpelz,' La Grande; unit leaders, Miss Barbara Smith of Everett, Wash., and Mrs. Olive Fields of Eugene; assistant unit counselors, Miss Jo Jensen of Forest Grove, Miss Nancy Pond of Portland, Miss Elaine Robinson of LaGrande and Miss Patricia Nickel of Albany. The regular staff is assisted by senior Scout camp aides from Sweet Home and Salem. Camp cook this year is Mrs. Elizabeth Hooper of Eugene, kitchen helper, Miss Iola Hoxworth of Corvallis and handy boy, Ray Thorpe of Eugene. Two reg istered nurses on the staff are Mrs. L. E. Block and Mrs. Norman Dodds, both of Silverton, and one or .more register ed nurses are still needed for the final sessions. ' " ' Mrs. A. M. Zahare and Mrs. H. E. Smedley entertained with a garden par ty and buffet supper Thursday evening at the country home of the former for their daughters, Miss Patricia Zahare and Miss Norvada Smedley, who. will be leaving Salem soon. A group of 12 of the girls' friends attended. After her wedding August 4 to Gail " Murray, Miss Zahare will move to Cor vallis where Mr. Murray will complete his work toward his degree. Miss Smed ley has a leading part in the operetta, "The Bartered Bride," which is to be given in Portland the last of August, and she will be in Portland .during the month for rehearsals. ' THE ANNUAL picnic for students enrolled in education classes at the Willamette university sum mer session is planned for Monday after noon and evening at the Leslie play ground recreation area. Students and their families are to attend. Softball games are scheduled at 4 o'clock. A picnic supper will be served followed by games to be played at the tables. Arrangements for the affair are being made by Dr. George B. Martin, head of the education department. . Senator Hawk of New Jersey and Presi dent Wallace Hall of Detroit, Mich, Guild Plans Benefit Card Party Junior Guild of St. Paul's Episcopal church is arranging its annual card party benefit for Thursday afternoon, August 2, ai)the Homer H. Smith garr dens at 675 North Summer. Hours for the affair are between 2 and 4 o'clock and bridge and pinochle will be in play. ' Announcement was made last evening of the engagement of Miss Sara Ann Oh ling to Donald H. Wells. Miss Ohling was hostess for a group of friends for a dessert supper and the names of the couple were ' on ; ribbons on corsages which were at each place at the trble. The bride-elect is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merrill D. Ohling of Sa lem and Mr. Wells is the son of Harvey L. Wells of Sweet Home. No date has been set for the wedding. Miss Ohling is a graduate of Willam ette university where she is affiliated with Pi Beta Phi sorority. She took post graduate work at University of Washington. She is a member of the Spinsters club. Mr. Wells attended Northwestern and was graduated from Oregon State c'olege. He is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
