I i r s c New Officers Spinsters Dance to Be On July 7 Because of many other events slated for the evening of June 30 the Spinsters club has changed the date of its terrace dance to July 7. The party will be at the Walter Kirk home. The club met last evening at the home of Miss Marjorie Tho mas with Miss Joan Voigt and Miss Barbara Sundet as co-hostesses. Plans were discussed for pos sible new projects. It was also announced that the patronesses of the group are planning a mid summer benefit for the club. Next meeting for Spinsters will be July 9 at the Ralph H. Cooley home with Mrs. John P. Maulding, Miss Mariann Croisan and Mrs. Robert Steeves as the hostesses. GUESTS of Mrs. H. H. Chart ton until the first of July are Mr. and Mrs. Lee H. Hanson of Los Angeles. Mrs. Hanson is the former Maybelle Propp who lived in Salem for a time and attended schools here. AN INFORMAL house party will be held at the home of Mrs. Beth Fry for her house guest, Miss Dorothy Dalmatian on Thursday. Refreshments will be served to Invited guests and entertainment will be furnish ed by the B.C. Co-eds. Going to Camp Several Salem girls will be going to the one-week session of the Santiam area Girl Scouts summer camp at Smith Creek starting June 24. Going from Salem will be Judy Wood, Ann Cates, Janice Brakeley,' Marcia Hewitt, Linda Lee Ramage, Barbara Smith and from Woodburn, Patsy Ann French. Sunday Event Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Batterman have invited a large group of friends for an open house at their Morningside home, Sun day, the occasion marking the couple's 23rd wedding anniver sary. Friends have been invited to call between 3 and 7 o'clock. Assisting the hosts will be Mr. and Mrs. John A. Ritchie, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Brown, Mr. and Mrs. William While, Mr. and Mrs. Garlen Simpson, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Polls. Is Bridc-clcct - Miss Bev erly Claire Landon, daughter of Mr and Mrs. F. B. Landon, has announced her engage ment to James Francis Brazie, son of Mr and Mrs. Donald Brazie. (Jesten-Miller studio picture) Auxiliary Installation Installation of officers for Hollywood Lions club was con ducted at the meeting of the group Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. James Tindall. Mrs. Carl Lindstrom was chairman for arranging the in stallation. Mrs. Robert Hanna installed the following officers: Mrs. J. L. Batdorf, president; Mrs. Cecil Lantz, first vice presi dent; Mrs. Archie Elliott, sec ond vice president; Mrs. Alfred Williams, secretary; Mrs. O. M. Engdahl, treasurer. A gift was presented Mrs. P. W. Hale, out going president. Mrs. Alfred Williams was chairman for the program, pre senting some of the Civic Play ers who put on a short play. Reports were given on the re cent state convention at Baker when Mrs. A. J. Crose of the Hollywood auxiliary was elect ed state president. Mrs. J. L. Bat dorf, Mrs. Carl Lindstrom and Mrs. James Tindall gave the re ports. Hostesses for the meeting were Mrs. Carl Gies, Mrs. Vern Boone and Mrs. James Wilson. The meeting was the last until Sep tember, MR. AND MRS. Clark C. Mc Call returned Tuesday from a few days' trip to Weiscr, Payette Lakes and Boise, Idaho. Boots and Spurs T By GRAHAM SHARKEY Mr. and Mrs. Ervln Ward gave the saddle clubbers one of the most hilarious programs of the year at the fun night last week. Ella Drukce with her floppy hat and king-size over alls, Al Inglls as an undertaker with his tuxedo, bathing cap and dark glasses were prize win ners for tlieir costumes and man ners. This was a hard times party but it can be overdone when, with the efforts of yourself and horse, you win the prize is a a stick of gum and in the club room afterwards dry crusts of bread, cull strawberries and cof fee made from two coffee beans were served. This was followed, however, by big helpings of fresh strawberry topping on ice cream along with coffee and cake to ov ercome the hardtime theme of the party. This past week-end most of the riding members of the club were trailing their horses to the soulli entrance of the Silver Creek falls area where an abandoned farm had been turned over fur head quarters for tlieir first overnight trail ride. Saturday afternoon the riders followed the lookout trail to Eagle mountain and upon return to camp completed their ideas on digging In after which dinner was served. It was a typical cowboy meal with every thing on a plate and the oppor tunity for second helpings. As darkness fell the group moved Inside and with the aid of Andy Neliton and his pal, Mc Millin a square dance was organ ized with Bert Bilycu as caller. The next morning the trail took them to the edge of the old Ma Ihcny homestead and then back over part of the trail that was used the day before. More than 40 members with 16 trailers made the trip and credit goes to President Glenn Conklin for the arrangements. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Wil lis Clark and their niece, Ted dy MeKinney, Bert Bilycu, Ber niee Summers, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kellogg, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wheeler, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Stangoby, and their boys, Bruce and Roy, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Conklin and their daughters, Sheila and Sandra, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lindeman and son, Mike. Salem Soroptimists gathered at the American Legion club for a formal dinner and annual in stallation of officers, Monday evening. Guests attended from the Mc- Minnville, Hood River, Baker and Portland clubs, and visitors also were present from Erie, Pa. and Santa Fe, N.M. Mrs. Lloyd Myers, new president of the Pacific Northwest Council of Credit Women's clubs, District No. 10, and Miss Beverly Hart zell, presidentof the Salem Credit Women's Breakfast club, also were guests. New officers Installed include: Mrs. Leo Johnson, president Mrs. Donald Reinke, vice presi dent; Miss Mary Brady, treasur er; Mrs. E. H. Kennedy, corres ponding secretary; Mrs. E. A, Guenthner, recording secretary; Mrs. Terese Hanks, board member. Two new members inducted are Mrs. M. D. Fidler and Mrs. Marjorie Charboneau. For the music, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Naff sang; the trio from the Arthur's Health studio sang and Mrs. James C. Stone played flute numbers, accompanied by miss Alice crary Brown. MRS. RUTH HERNDON will be in Tillamook on Saturday to attend a reception to be given by Mrs. David A. DeCook and her sister, Mrs. L. E. Heinze, the affair to honor Ensign and Mrs. David Walpole DeCook (Mary Iou Herndon), who were mar ried here Monday evening. MISS PATRICIA GORDON, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Gordon, left the first of the week to visit relatives in Central City, Neb. She will spend most of the time at the home of her grand mother, Mrs. W. G. Sampson. Housewarming Due A group of friends is plan nip a housewarming for Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kirk at their new home in Morningside for jiext Sunday. Members of Mrs. Kirk's bridge club have ar ranged the party. A buffet sup per is planned for 5 o'clock, the hostesses including Mrs. Brazier C. Small, Mrs. Karl Becke, Mrs. H. G. Maison, Mrs. Edgar T. Pierce. Mrs. Ralph S. Hamilton, Mrs. Kenneth Bell, Mrs. Ronald E. Jones, Mrs. F. W. Poorman. Go to Festival Among those to be at Sandy this Friday and Saturday for the annual strawberry festival there will be Secretary of State and Mrs. Earl T. Newbry. The Newbrys spent the week end at their home in southern Oregon. Their daughter, Miss Shirlce Newbry, entertained a group of college friends over the week-end, the group includ ing Miss Juanita McCurdy of Salem. Miss Newbry is remain ing at Ashland for the summer. Later, in early July, Mrs. New bry plans to go south, she and the daughter to spend the sum mer at their summer home at Lake of the Woods. Meeting Friday The social club for Trinity chapter. Order of Eastern Star, is meeting Friday for a lunch eon at noon in the West Salem City hall. On the committee arc Mrs. H. H. Charlton, Mrs. J. B. Avison, Mrs. Hazel Anderson and Mrs. Harry Phillips. HERE over Wednesday from Portland were Mrs. Robert Ricdcr and children, Necna and Robin, guests at the home of Mrs. Rieder's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Valter H. Smith. While here Necna observed her sev enth birthday anniversary. AT THE WEEKLY day for the Oak Knoll Ladies Golf club, Wednesday, blind bogie was the plav, low scores going to Mrs. William W. Wood, Mrs. Robert Kralicck and Mrs. A. J. Cleveland. Lebanon Announcement has been made of the engage ment of Miss Vera Louise Vawter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Vawter of Water loo, to Earl B. FRANK SIS- LER leave Salem this week to make their temporary home in Topeka, Kansas. They are driv ing east. At Topeka, Dr. Sisler has been appointed to a fellow ship in psychology at the Men ninger Foundation School of Psychology. For the past two and one-half years Dr. Sisler has been on the medical staff at the Oregon State hospital and Mrs. Sisler has been with the eye, ear, nose and throat clinic. New President Installed recently as president of the Silverton Business and Pro fessional Women's club for the coming year was Mrs Ernest R. Ekinan, above. Circle Event Silverton Mrs. Pearl Porter, program chariman of the Sarah Adams circle, presented "Health in the Philippine Islands " as dis cussion topic at the Tuesday afternoon meeting of the Wom an's Society of Christian Service in the Methodist cuhrch social rooms, Mrs. Ida Palmer directed devotions. Mrs. Lawrence L i e r m a n WSCS president, presented a number of projects for discus sion that might be promoted during the ensuing church year. The next regular meeting of the society will be at the church parlors the evening of the third Tuesday in July. ' THE AUXILIARY 'of the Mili tary Order of the Purple Heart is to meet in special session Fri day at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs. George Quesseth, 1040 North Cottage. Chapter's Guest Tea Members of Chapter BC of P.E.O. Sisterhood entertained with a guest day tea Tuesday afternoon at the country home of Mrs. Burton A. Myers, the affair being between 2:30 and 4:30 o'clock. A program was given out on the terrace and tea was served inside. Mrs. Charles Layport, chapter president poured. The tea table was set with a gold cloth and a silver bowl with pihk, white and yellow blooms. Mrs. Arthur Bates and Mrs. Lynn Switzcr assisted Mrs. Myers. The chapter is through with regular meetings until fall, the group to gather for a special event on the evening of July 5 at the home of Mrs. Layport. HOME FORM a week in Vic toria, B.C. are Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Scellars. They attended the Oregon Mutual Insurance com pany event held at the Empress hotel.
