t TT'- Vir i r - - No One Has a Good Word for Inflation But Many Like It By SAM DAWSON New York, June 21 (&) The housewife who hopes for lower prices and the producers and merchants who say they are being hamstrung by controls are squarely at odds again today. Congress talks of hog-tieing efforts to roll back the prices of eral fold unlil the bubble bunts. Deflation or a drop in the cost of living and a rise in the value of the dollar looks mighty tempting to everyone, on paper. But when you try. to bring it about through controls and credit, curbs on pay raises, and rollbacks in prices, deflation is about the most unpopular thing around. It means that farmers and oth er producers of raw materials get fewer dollars when they sell the fruits of their labor. It means processors of these mate rials get less for the finished product, and may be caught with the goods on hand and lose a lot of money. It means that fighting infla tion by credit curb leaves- auto and household appliance dealers with slock they can't move, and many lower-income pepole are denied the goods they want be cause the payment terms have gone out of their reach. It means that controls bury one and all under an avalanche of paper work and red tape with confusion twice confounded. And always controls breed more controls. No one has a good word for inflation. It sends the cost of cuts the real value of savings accounts, insurance policies, "E" bonds and pensions. But a lot of people enjoy in flation in practice. Pay checks are fatter even if they buy less per dollar at the store. In come from things they grow and produce is greater. Corporation sales, earnings and dividends climb fast in dollar volume.
