Capital Women Edited by MARIAN LOWRY FISCHER 6 Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon, Monday, May 21, 1951 Annual Tea And Program Next Sunday Planned for next Sunday af ternoon, May 27, is the annual musical and silver tea sponsored by the Willamette university chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon, na tional music honor society. The program will be present ed at 2 p.m. in Waller hall, theme for this year's event being "Mu sic Through the Ages." Members of the chapter present the pro gram. Later, a reception will be giv en in the Music building between 3 and 5 o'clock. The silver of fering is to be used for the na tional Mu Phi Epsilon project and for chapter expenses. Recital Event of Monday Evening Lois Plummer Schmidt will present her piano pupils in recital on Monday evening, May 21, at 7:45 o'clock in the Car rier room of the First Methodist church. Student appearing on the program are: Judy McClel lan, Eugenia Margosian, Linda McClaughry, Linda Bates, Allen Bates, Nancy Bates, Joanne Cooley, Sharon Kinton, Sherrill Brinkley, and Janet Lundy. Others appearing on the pro gram are: Gloria, Kathleen and Rodney Schmidt, piano pupils of Margaret Hogg; Rodney Schmidt, violin student of Victor Pal mason; Linda Lee Miklia and Judy Mansfield, piano pupils of Mrs. David Bates. Assisting with a group of vocal numbers will be Miss Shirley Bosell, soprano, student of John Schmidt, Jr. Monmouth Club Elects Officers for Year Monmouth Mrs. E. K. Gen tle was elected to head the Monmouth Civic club at a meet ing in the city hall club rooms last week. Vice president will be Mrs. Current; secretary, Mrs. Hilterbrand; and treasurer, Mrs. O. A. Macy. The group voted to give $2 to the Penny Art fund. Plans to sponsor a booth at the Polk county fair were discussed and Mrs. Elmer Chapin, Mrs. Ellis Stebbins and Mrs. Harold Corn stock were appointed to draw up plans and oversee the necessary work. Mrs. Dolmor Dewey was appointed to see the city coun cil about redecorating and paint ing of the kitchen, also repairs to the roof above the main floor. Annual luncheon plans were presented by Mrs. C. F. Gil lette and the group decided to have the luncheon in the club rooms with the American Le gion auxiliary in charge oi the serving. The date will be Thurs day May 31, at 1 p.m. There will be garden visiting after the luncheon. Three pupils from Central high school with their instruc tor, Mrs. Joyce Carver, as ac companist, entertained the group with several numbers. Tea hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. E. W. Slants, Mrs. Clyde Dickson and Mrs. A. F. Htiber, with Mrs. Gillolte pouring. THE P. 1,. E. AND F. club is meeting at the home of Mrs Frank Kolsky, 3010 Brooks street, Wednesday at 8 p.m. Mrs. Dora Stnnton and Mrs. Wayne Stanton are assisting hostesses. GRADUATING seniors at the Chi Omega chapter at Willam ette university will be honored at a formal banquet planned at the sorority chapter house this evening. AMONG recent guests at the Naniloa hotel on the seashore at Hilo Bay. Hawaii, were Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Chadwiik of Salem, who are on a month's stay in the Islands. Benefit Tuesday The general public interested in the new Salem General hos pital, both men and women, are invited to the annual benefit garden party planned by Salem Zonta club Tuesday. The affair will be given at the North 14th street home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burlingham be tween 3 and 6 o'clock in the af ternoon, and between 7 and 9 o'clock in the evening. All pro ceeds go to the club's project for a pediatric ward at the hospital. Altrusa Tea Sunday Event The Altrusa club of Salem sponsored a tea, honoring all senior high school girls of Sa lem and their mothers, at the home of Mrs. E. Alexander Tu eaki Sunday The decorations were various shades of purple and gold irises and syringa blossoms. The tea table centerpiece was an epergne filled with lemons and purple azaleas, the cloth of yellow satin. The candles were blue surrounded by white flow ers. Blue and white are Altrusa colors. The punch bowl table was de.corated with green ferns and Cecil Brunner roses. Mrs. Hilda Brent, a past presi dent of Altrusa in Pendleton, and Mrs. Viola Parks poured at the coffee tables and Mrs. Addison W. Lane served at the jpunch bowl. Hawaiian music was played by Susanna Howell and Thad Stevens on accordions and Ber niece Raph on the electric gui tar The club members assisting in the tea were Miss Cora Paynter, Miss Minnie Just, Miss Margaret McDevitt, Miss Etta Sutter, Mrs. George Sumpter, Mrs. Addison W. Lane and Mrs. Tueski. Miss Allen Feted Four Corners Miss Lucille Allen was honored last week at a bridal shower in compliment to her forthcoming marriage to Dyle Fusscll on June 15 in the First Christian church in Sa lem. Hostesses wore Miss Ella- ree Morton and Mrs. Royce Lin-hart. Preseent were Miss Allen's mother, Mrs. Frank Gabler. of Four Corners and her fiance's mother Mrs. Ralph Fussell, Mrs. Arthur Tinker, Mrs. Bertel Sjo- ding. SILVERTON Mr. and Mrs, Cecil Rice of Eugene, formerly of Silverton arc announcing the birth of a daughter, Dana Jan at Sacred Heart hospital, Sat urday, May 12. A sister of Mrs, Rice, Mrs. Fred Baker of Enum- claw, Wash., is with the family for a fortnight. The Rices have two other daughters, Patricia, a student at the University of Ore gon, and Mrs. Gene Scott (Cnth eleene Rice) of Silverton. Engaged The engagement of Miss Patricia Olson, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln Olson, to Alton Van Antwerp, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Van Antwerp, has been announced. WORK BASKET CLUB will meet at the home of Mrs. Lillie Broylis, 1144 North Cottage street for an afternoon sewing meeting, Tuesday. Plans will be made for a rummage sale May 26 and 28 at 294 North Commer cial. Mrs. Blaine Martin is chair man and on the committee are Mrs. Stuart Johns, Mrs. Alma Hatfield and Mrs. Verne Ostran der. Parties for Visitors Planned Visitors being extensively en tertained during their stay in the capital are Misses Helen and Eli zabeth Thomas of Bennington, Vt who are guests at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Robert D. Gregg. On T.uesday, Mrs. Charles A. Sprague is to entertain for the visitors at her summer home on the North Santiam, a group of 16 being invited for luncheon. On Friday, Mrs. Louis Gerlin- ger is entertaining at luncheon for the visitors. At Wedding Mr. and Mrs. Louis Gerlinger were among out-of-town guests at the wedding of Mrs. Gerling er's niece, Miss Elizabeth Lee Bragg, and Peter Murchie Wil helm in Portland Saturday. The afternoon wedding was at Trin. ity Episcopal church, the recep tion following at the Waverley Country club. Mrs. Gerlinger served the cake at the recep tion. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Tully Bragg of Portland and Mr. Wil helm the son of Mrs. George H. Wilhelm, all of Portland. The couple will make their home in Billings, Mont. HOME from a vacation trip to the east coast and south are Dr. and Mrs. Carl Benson, who returned Friday evening. Dance Club Elects New officers are announced for the Bonheur Dance club following the group's last dance of the season, Friday evening. The officers are: Ed Harrison, president; Fred Humphrey, vice preseident; K. W. Hamilton, secretary - treasurer; Mrs. Neil Brown, publicity chairman. Guests at the Friday party in cluded Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Seamster, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Halvarson, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jacobsen, Dr. and Mrs. Estill L. Brunk, Mr. and Mrs. Steve An derson, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Gregg. The club will resume its danc ing schedule in October. Past President to Meet Again in Fall The Past Presidents club of Marion auxiliary to Post No. 661, met with Mrs. Arthur Davis last week for the regular meeting with Mrs. Virgil Bolton presiding. The group decided not to meet during the summer and the next meeting will be in Sep tember. The rooms were decorated with bearded irises and giant snow balls. At the close of the meeting refreshments were serv ed to Mesdames Genevieve Olson, Mae Wilder, George Mai son, Virgil Bolton, James Beall, Leroy Simpson, Dave Furlough, Mel Clemens, Henry Sim, Leon Hanson, Edward Van Santen. Junior CDA Sets Formal On May 25 The "Old Lamp Lighter" is the theme of the spring formal to be sponsored by the Junior Catholic Daughters of America on May 25 at the Catholic Center The committee in charge of the formal, Mrs. Ruby Wees, as adviser, is made up of the troop presidents, Jackie Johnson, Jackie Rom, Shirley Sommers, Mary Cecil Rocque, Helen Bel sher, and the court officers, Rose mary Dougherty, Janette Hill and Joan Sterner. Assisting them will be Doloris Hainer, Darline Stabb, Lois Pe terson, Pat Orton, Margaret Bach, Mary Angela Suing and Marian Watkins. Invitation is extended to all Junior Catholic Daughters and to former members of the or ganization to attend the dance, Tickets for the alumnae may be obtained from Mrs. Ruby Wees at the candy counter at Mars Fountain Lunch. Prentiss-Cooley Mrs. A. F. Marcus announces the marriage of her daughter, Mrs. Mabel E. Cooley, to Rob ert W. Prentiss of Portland. The wedding was Saturday, May 18. Following a trip to the beaches, the couple will be at home at 2270 Center street. Engagement Told The engagement of Miss Doris Jane Punzel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Punzel of Salem, to Pvt. Robert E. Miller, nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Galli hugh of Salem, has been an nounced. Pvt. Miller is tation ed at Fort Bragg, N.C. The wed ding is planned for June. Heath- Young Gates Mr. and Mrs. Len Young are announcing the mar riage of their daughter Miss Frances A. Young, to Colis Heath, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ger ald Heath. The couple were married in Reno, Nevada Tues day, May 1. Both attended Gates school and are graduates of Gates high school. They will continue to reside here. SHERIDAN Guy Tatom of Sheridan announces the engage ment of his daughter, Miss Bar bara Tatom, to Pvt. Gordon Bronson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Bronson of Sheridan.
