14 FC FC Nc CI c: 16 Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon, Monday, May 21, 1951 Caution on Price Quoting In Sawlog Market Shown Corvallis, May 21 VP) A little caution on price quoting was noted in the Willamette valley sawlog market last week, the Oregon State college extension service reported today. In the first of a planned series of weekly farm forest market reports, based on data from state farm foresters and other sources the extension service pointed1- out that recent lumber price de clines had resulted in unsettled conditions. The report in detail: Douglas fir Willamette val ley mills were paying from $35 to $44 a thousand board feet camp run for second growth saw logs. Offers were mostly around $40 with premiums paid for large logs and discounts for smal logs. Eight foot logs down to 6-inch tops brought $15 to $18 a cord or $35 to $40 a thou sand in the central and southern part of the valley. In some lo calities demand exceeded the supply. Old growth saw logs remained steady at prices rang ing from $36 to $58 a thousand, depending on grade. Peeler logs were also steady at from $70 to $110 a thousand. Prior to the drop in lumber prices, second growth stumpage prices were mostly $8 to $16 a thousand, depending on loca tion, quality, volume and other conditions. The decline in lum ber prices has had little effect on stumpage, but loggers are be ing more careful on naming prices. Pulpwood The pulpwood market was steady with demand generally very good. Delivered prices were $20 a cord for peel ed spruce and $19 for peeled Douglas fir, noble fir, white fir. and hemlock down to 4-inch diameter in 4-foot lengths. Un peeled, these woods down to 6 inch diameter in 8-foot lengths were quoted at $17 a cord. Hem lock and spruce logs brought from $35 to $44 a thousand in the central valley. Cottonwood ranged from $18 a cord in the northern valley to $14 in the southern valley. Alder was in limited demand at $17 a cord. Poles and piling Douglas fir poles, both peeled and "barkies" were in generally good demand. Barkie poles ranged from 9 cents to 30 cents per linear foot for poles from 20 to 75 feet long. Peeled poles brought from 12 cents to 36 cents a foot for lengths from 30 to 80 feet in the southern valley. Northern valley prices for peeled poles were 36 cents a linear foot for 55-foot poles and 40 cents for 60 to 70-foot poles, minimum top diameter 8 inches. Sales of piling were insufficient to re port prices. Hardwood logs Alder ash and maple brought $35 to $40 a thousand board feet in the cen tral and southern valley. De mand was generally good, al though outlets are few. Cotton wood ranged from $22 to $25 a thousand, with a very good sea sonal demand for 54-inch split and peeled cordwood for excel sior at $4 a cord, delivered. One mill in the Eugene area bought Chinquapin at $37.50 a thou sand. Other forest products One mill in the southern valley was paying $27 a thousand for pine logs. There is a standing offer of $20 a ton for Douglas fir bark up to 1V4 inches thick at one tannery in the central val ley. Cascara was reported at 10 cents a pound green and 25 cents dry at dealers, and 27 cents dry delivered to plants, Sword fern was 19 cents a bunch of 52 fronds. Suction Pulls Air Force Pilot to Death Westover Airforce Base, Mass., May 21 W) An airforce pilot was killed yesterday when the powerful suction of a jet plane air scoop pulled him into the mechanism. Dead was Lt. Thomas A. Kirkcs, 26, of Lawton, Okla. An airforce spokesman said Kirkes had walked in front of an F-86 fighter plane. The accident happened shortly before thous ands gathered at the field to watch an Armed Forces day air show. Churches Hear Dr. Giersbach By joining hands and working together the kingdom of God can be brought about in our time, declared Dr. Walter Gierbach, president of Pacific university, as he spoke before representa tives of a dozen or more Salem churches at the First Christian church Sunday night. The union service was con ducted under the sponsorship of the Salem Council of Churches with Dr. Victor H. Sword as president. Other participating ministers were Rev. Dudley Strainpastor of the host church; Rev. Brooks Moore, pastor of the First Methodist church and Rev. Louis White, of the Knight Me morial Congregational church. Mayor Al Loucks presided. Dr. Ciersbach points out that trenches are man made while truth, love and faith are God made and can span all differen ces. The common law of the New Testament, the common lan guage, love and the common head, Christ, can combine to bring peace, he asserted.' Gen, Stratemeyer 111 Tokyo, May 21 (JP) Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway was the only visitor permitted to see Lt. Gen. George E. Stratemeyer, Far East air forces commander, in an air force hospital today. Strate meyer suffered a heart attack while playing golf Sunday. Doc tors said he was resting quietly Monday. OCE Summer School Plans Broad Program Monmouth A complete and interesting program for summer school will be available in the OCE campus elementary school, according to Dr. Elmer Ensi, principal. The six-weeks session, which will begin Monday, June 25, and continue through August 3, will offer learning experiences in nursery school, kindergarten, primary, intermediate and upper grades. Early enrollment is urged, as it may be necessary to limit the size of the nursery and kinder garten groups and some other classes, as well. A tuition fee of $5, payable to the college bus iness office upon enrollment, is charged for the nursery school and the kindergarten. There is no charge for the other grades. Childen must be four years old by November 15, 1951, to be ac ceptable for nursery school, and five years old by the same date for kindergarten. Children who are slightly younger will be placed on a waiting list for fu ture admission in case enroll ment permits. 12 4-H Scholarships To Be Given at Keizer Keizer Twelve scholarships to the annua) 4-H Summer school neia on tne Oregon btate cam pus are available to Keizer mem bers through the courtesy of lo cal organizations and business firms. Announcements of winners will be made after the Marion county committee goes through the applications, May 24. Eleven of the scholarships are for one-half of the expenses while one is for all expenses. The full scholarship is donated by the Keizer business men.
