Newspaper Page Text1 Light Plane Ski Attachment Perfected by Lebanon Men Lebanon A wheel and ski attachment to lit any light private airplane, has been perfected and its use demonstrated this week, announced Walter Bowman, field manager at Cascade Airways. It followed two years of experimentation. The unit was devised by Ellis Hallman and Jesse Parrish, shop men ai me vasi-due Airways under the supervision of Bowman.- The ski-wheel attachment was successfully tried Saturday af ternoon. Designers say the unit will fit any ship up to 1500 pounds gross 4 weight. It takes less than 60 seconds to .either attach or detach from the plane. Larger versions are planned for heavier ships, including Na vion, Fairchild and Stinson. The working unit weighs nine pounds, six less than the wheels which it replaces. Each ski is approximately four feet long and has two small wheels which West Salem Graders Give Yule Program The West Salem elementary school presented its Christmas program in the gymnasium Tuesday evening to a large and appreciative audience. The program consisted of a series of colorfully lighted Nati vity scenes illustrated by Christ mas carols sung by a robed choir ranked on one side of the audi torium and a similarly robed verse cnoir on tne other side giving the Christmas story in concert. Both classes will receive a swimming party at the YMCA in the near future. Oregonian Appointment Portland. Dec. 21 (U.R) M. .T Frey, general manager of the Oregonian .today announced ap pointment of J. R. Somerville as business manairer nf fho newspaper. Somerville has been the paper's chief auditor since 1946. Somerville replaces Arden X. Pangborn, -who resigned to become general manager of two radio stations at San Antonio, rex. lower for landing on hard sur faces. The wheels are retracted when landing or taking off in snow. At present the wheels are manually operated, but Bow man said they planned to in stall a hydraulic unit for low ering and raising wheels which can be operated from the ship's cabin. The hydraulic unit will add only an additional half pound to the overall weight. In lest flights by Bowman the ski-equipped Piper Cub took off as quickly on the skis as it did on regular wheels. In landing, the pilot was able to halt the ship much faster. The plane was stopped safely inside 75 feet. Bowman pointed out addition al safety factors about the in vention. It allows the plane to land on any type of runway which regular wheels could be used upon, plus several other types of terrain, including plowed fields, landing strips having both cleared and snow covered spots upon them, and areas covered with heavy grasses. The designers announced their intentions to conduct extensive tests in the near future, and then will manufacture the units on a limited scale at Cascade Airways. 8 Merchants To Give Parly Eight downtown merchants invite the people of the Willam ette valley to a free "open house party" to be held Friday after noon, from noon till 6 o'clock, at the Elsinore theatre in Salem. A screen program of a fea ture picture and several selected short subjects will be presented, a parcel checking service will be provided for guests' conveni ence, and all downtown shoppers are urged to use the theatre as a downtown meeting place, Admission to the party is free and tickets can be obtained now from these downtown met- chants: J. Army Paper Quotes Capital Journal Editor "Editors View the News," a column in the Army, Navy and Air Force Journal in its De cember 9 issue, again quoted from an editorial of the Capital Journal. This quotation was from an editorial written noting the Marine Corps' birthday on No vember 10. Agent 1395 Norway Pil.33951 Jail Shelter From Murder Columbus, O., Dec. 21 (U.R) A Kansas City ex-convict with a record "three pages long" told police today he wanted to stay in jail because he knows too much about the gangland slay ings last April in the Missouri city. Thurman Alexander Steele, 54, told police "I'll be safer in jail than out." He is wanted tot questioning in connection with the slayings of gang leader Char les Gargota and political leader Charles Bingaggio in a Kansas City Democratic club earlier this year. Authorities said Steele is the president of the Retail Clerks association, local 782, of Kansas City. He left that city about Sept. 3, coming to Columbus where he lived in 1920. Steele was arrested here Dec. 16 for investigation of grand larceny. Detective Sergeant Her man Beck said he was question ed about the theft of a sewing machine from the home at which he had rented a room. Police said Steele, who has a wife and four children In Kan sas City, has refused to obtain an attorney.
