Willamette in Semester Plan 8m. Tit. flantfal Tntimal. KaTem. Ore.. Wednesdav. Dm. ft. 19501 I The American university of Washington, D. C, has singled out Willamette university as the only Institution of its kind west of the Mississippi to participate in the "Washington semester plan," President G. Herbert Smith has been informed. Under the program, two to four qualified majors in the so cial sciences are selected from each university to go to Washing ton in the second semester of! their junior year to study dur ing the full semester while en rolled in their own institution and receive academic credit as if they were carrying the same courses on their own campus. The plan calls for study under four major headings: an individ ual study project worked out in connection with some one of the government officials; a seminar on American government in ac tion in which government offi cials will appear as speakers: courses in the school of social sciences and public affairs of the American university; and special events including social invita tions to some of the embassies, invitations to professional soci eties and trips to points of his torical interest. Other schools included in the plan are Allegheny, Dickinson, Westminster in Pennsylvann Hiram, Oberlin, Denison and Wooster in Ohio; Birmingham- Southern in Alabama; Hamline in Minnesota; Lindenwood in Missouri and Transylvania in Kentucky. In March of this year, Wil lamette joined Carnegie Tech in a combined plan, whereby a stu dent may receive both a bachelor! of arts degree from Willamette and a bachelor of science degree in engineering and science from Carnegie Tech in five years. Frat Decision Pleases Board Gratification over the decision of Circuit Judge Charles Combs of Lakeview in upholding the right of the Portland school board to suppress secret societies of every kind and character, was expressed Tuesday by Harry Scott, chairman of the Salem school board. Scott believes Judge Combs' decision will go a long way to ward eliminating secret society activities in Salem as well as other places in the state. How ever, the situation locally has been fairly dormant since the Salem board was upheld by the eourts last year after a number itnrfents had been expelled. Schools are becoming more and more reluctant to register ctnrients who have been expelled for secret society activies, it has been learned. This means the student who has been expelled stands a good chance of being unable to continue his scholastic work until the start of a new school year.
