Middle Grove 4-H Clubbers Given Scholarship Awards Middle Grove The achievement night program for Marion county 4-H clubi held In Salem the past week was of special Interest to Middle Grove leaders and parents of children who have been In 4-H work for several years. The largest award given at the meeting was the $100 scholarship award to Yvonne uooae, aaugnier ol Mr. and Mrs. Emory Coode. Marvin Cage for the second year was winner of the George Eyre awards for outstanding awine projects with the trophy presented by T. R. Hobart of Ladd and Bush branch of the United States National bank. Steve Patterson, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Patterson, was given a full scholarship to Corvallia summer school, which will have to be kept over as he will not be able to attend be cause of his age for another year. Lewis Patterson received a cash award and special awards were given Joanne Fabry, Joyce Kunzie, Shirley Page and Su zanne Anglin. Mrs. Paul Massett was host ess for the November meeting of Amitie club at her home on Silverton road with 27 present. Assisting hostesses were Mrs. John Van Laanen, Mrs. Leo Ham mer and Mrs. August Otjen. Mrs. Lewis Patterson was chairman of the entertainment commit tee. Mrs. James Schardine was the honored guest for a surprise shower. Guests were Mrs. Clyde Kuenze and Mrs. Roger Moore. The Christmas party will also be held on Wednesday, December 13, with an exchange of gifts. The president, Mrs. Lee Dow, presided at the business meet ing. There was a large attendance with several Items of business considered and a good program for the Friday night meeting of the Middle Grove Associated clubs. With the president, Gil Blank enship, presiding, a bazaar for December, first to be held in Sa lem at the Bramble Kitchen cen ter, was planned with Mrs. Ern est Crum as general chairman. The same evening, which is the regular meeting night of the club penny carnival will be held at the school house. A square dance to follow the meet ing of December 15 was planned with Charles Anglin, James Scardine, Charles Wenger, Ern est Crum and Henry Sprick named as the committee in charge. The principal, Wallace Tumidge, announced the school's Christmas program for the night of December 20. The clubs will sponsor the basketball team which will practice in the gym nasium of Swegle school. Wal lace Turnidge will be captain for the team assisted by Donald Bassett and Dale Van Laanen. Mrs. Cleo Keppinger gave the report of the nominating com mittee. Mrs. Norman Fletcher, program chairman presented the following program: numbers by the barber shop quartet, Gil Blankenship, Henry Sprick, Charles Wegner and Wallace Tumidge; a humorous skit from the song "Annie Get Your Gun" with Mrs. M. E. McCauley at the piano and Norman Fletcher with Connie, Donnie and Johnie Anglin taking parts, a real hill billy family; a mock wedding closed the program with Vera Bassett at the piano, Norman Fletcher the minister; John Ang lin the bride, Melvin Van Cleave the groom; Wallace Tumidge the maid of honor; Gil Blanken- - ship the bride's mother; John Van Lannen, the bride's father best man, Henry Sprick; brides maids, Dale Van Laanen and Donald Bassett, flower girl; George Hardy and rejected suit er, James Schardine. Refreshments were served by a committee of men. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Crum at tended the wedding of her broth er George Bocek, Jr., and Leota Osgood in Olympia, Wash., at the Evangelical United Brethren church Saturday night. They al so drove to Aberdeen for a Sun day visit with her father, George Bocek, Sr. Panel Discussion Held Mt. Angel To familiarize the students with the work and ob jectives of the Young Christian Student, five members of the Mt. Angel Women's College chapter of the F.T.O. presented a panel on that subject at their last meeting. Topics discussed in cluded Student Vocations, Stu dent Environment, The Y.C.S., and teamwork of the Y.C.S. Panel members introduced by Helen Steenkolk included Jo- Ann Seifert, Doris Immonen, Marmen Given and Donna Reinegar. East Salem Women's Meets Dominates Week Activities East Salem Neighborhood club meetings were the special interest of several East Salem women the past week-end. Garden Road Neighborhood club met at the home of Mrs. Glenn Larkins on Park avenue Friday afternoon. A dessert lunch was served with Mrs. Paul Lynch assisting the hostess. With the president, Mrs. W. Mrs. Hanson Enters Plea of Not Guilty Corvallis, Nov. 21 WV- Mrs. Sigurd Hansen, 33, charged with murder in the death of her hus band, pleaded innocent yesterday before Circuit Judge Fred Mc Henry. The battered body of her hus band was found Sept. 10 in the garage of an apartment building where they lived. She was arrested in Eugene Saturday after a Benton county grand jury returned a secret in dictment charging first degree murder. A tentative date of Dec. 12 was set for her trial. Meanwhile, be cause of her health, she was or dered confined in Multnomah county jail quarters for women until the trial date. Her physi cian had her placed in a Corval lis hospital Saturday night, ex plaining she long had suffered from high blood pressure. Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon, Tuesday. Nov. 21. If" 1 Materials ranging from 3,000 miles of telephone wire to 3, 000,000 water-purifying tablets were landed in the Inchon area by the U.S. navy within two weeks after the landings. Richardson, presiding, officers for the coming new year were elected. Mrs. Richard T. Wick lander received the door prize and Mrs. R. B. Lapp the special prize. Present were Mrs. A. R. Tartar, Mrs. A. A. Geer, Mrs. Ralph Werner, Mrs. De Lapp, Mrs. Frank Ricket, Mrs. A. C. Schafer, Mrs. Richardson, Miss Frances Byram, Mrs. Mary Swin gle, Mrs. Jilia Jennings. Mrs. Wicklander, Mrs. William Hart ley and the hostesses. The Christ mas party will be at the home of Mrs. Ben Braucht. Brown Road Jolly Neighbors met Frioay with Mrs. Arlie Wil son. In attendance were Mrs. Henry Mehling, Mrs. George Brown, Mrs. V. Ellis, Mrs. John Jansen, Mrs. Ray Beraardy and the hostess. The Christmas meet ing will be with Mrs. George Brown and will start with a cov ered dish luncheon at noon. There will be a gift exchange, se cret pals revealed, and names drawn for the new year. The November meeting of Ed- ina Lane home extension unit was held at the home of Mrs, Brosia Cusick on Park avenue with 10 members and Mrs. Arlie Dean, as guest present. Mrs. Paul Riffey, vice presi dent presided at the business meeting and gave the report of the program planning meeting. A discussion followed with the re quired four subjects for the new year s program decided upon. The unit will have a Christmas party in the home of Mrs. James Keys on Thompson avenue at 8 o clock in the evening. There will be an exchange of fifty-cent gifts. Each member is asked to bring a guest who is a prospec tive member. Friends of Mr. and Mrs. E. I. Snethen, who have lived on Lan caster drive several years, but in Salem the past year, will be in terested to know they have again gone south to Arizona for the winter months. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Patz have returned to their home on Swegle road from a month s trip east. They visited his parents and oth er relatives in Indiana and her grandmother and relatives in North Dakota.
