Renewals of scat subscriptions for the
Portland Symphony orchestra concerts
in Salem this winter are well ahead of
last year, it is stated by the Salem Sym
phony society, indicating an increased
interest in the series of three local con
certs offered by this orchestra. The per
sonal appearance of Ernest Bloch, con
ducting two of his own works, is meet
ing with widespread enthusiasm.
Members of the ticket committee re
port that many purchasers remark that
this is an event they must not miss. A
Salem musician tells of an interesting
experience in New York this summer.
She was introduced to a famous English
pianist, now teaching at Juilliard and lec
turing on music in this country, with the
remark that the Salemite came from
Oregon. "Oregon," the British woman
repeated vaguely. Then with a flash
ing smile of recognition, "Ah, that is
where Ernest Bloch lives! Do you know
him, by any chance?"
Mr. Bloch, a composer'and conductor,
Is definitely putting Oregon on the mus
ical map. Mr. Bloch spent the summer
and autumn of 1949 in Europe, where
he conducted the orchestra of La Scala
in Milan, the Suisse Romandc in Geneva
and the London Philharmonic, among
others. At the famous International Fes
tival in Edinburgh he presented the
world premiere of his new piano con
certo, the highlight of the festival that
season. In London he also made record
ing for London Gramaphone.
All seats for the local concerts of the
symphony are reserved, with three price
levels available. Satisfaction with this
arrangement is expressed by patrons,
who find it convenient to avoid the neces
sity of an early arrival at the auditorium
and the following wait for the program.
Orders for renewals of seats held by
subscribers to the series last season will
be received until October 31, at which
time the general sale will open. Begin
ning Saturday, November 4, the chart
of seats will be in the Ladd and Bush
bank lobby, and season tickets only will
be sold through Thursday, November 9,
thus giving season ticket holders the
first choice of seats. From Friday, No
vember 10, through the day of the first
concert, November 14, tickets for single
concert also will be sold.
