Regulations Didn't Ston Him Joseph L. Smith, 18, (left) of Philadelphia, Pa. When he was told he couldn't sail for Korea with his buddies because his equipment was incomplete, he enlisted the help of his officers, purchased his own uniform and made the boat in time to receive a farewell handshake from Col. Thomas G. Jenkins (right) commanding officer of Camp Stoneman at Pittsburg, Calif. (AP Wircphoto) Eskimo Army in Far North is Guard Against Surprise Attack By JOHN J. RYAN (United Press Staff Correspondent) Nome, Alaska, July 13 (U.Ri An Eskimo army of more than 2000 skilled arctic hunters was being recruited and trained today to defend the strategic Alaska coastline opposite Siberia. Eskimo scout battalions of the Alaska national guard were being established at nearly every sizeable village along the arctic coast as far north as Point Bar- row. at the top of the North American continent. Eskimo men of military age were issued army uniforms, arms and equipment and trained to act as sentries, search and res cue units and possibly as guer rilla warriors. Col. Joseph D. Alexander, vet eran army officer in charge of organizing the guard, said that units were put on an "alert" basis as rapidly as they were ready for action. The watch for any possible Arctic invader is maintained 24 hours a day, seven days a week. "The army is depending on the Eskimos to provide the per manent defense garrison along thousands of miles of coastline which is less than 50 miles from Siberia In places," Alexander said. "As Arctic soldiers they will have no equals. They know how to survive in bitter Arctic cold and how to live off the country. Since they range far and wide in search of seal and caribou, any sneak Arctic invader would fall under their eyes very quick ly." Alexander said the Eskimos responded enthusiastically to the call for volunteers. So many wanted to join the guard that there wasn't enough equipment to outfit them all. Reculations riirln't sinn Pfn who canvassed remote Arctic villages said not a single Eskimo refused to volunteer. Since the Eskimos are skilled riflemen and adept at roaming the barren Arctic wastes, they learn military duties very rap idly, Alexander said. They are taught to march in formation as well as scouting, search and res cue and guerrilla warfare tech nique. Alexander said that a well trained Eskimo guard would be of tremendous value to the Unit ed States if war ever comes to the Arctic. Most declines were less than SI, however, and business was carried on In comparatively sedate fash ion. The market started the day with a wobbly advance which soon picked up a little momentum. In mid-morning one of the selling blasts Which Wall Street has grown accustomed to lately killed the rally In short order. Gains running to more than si a share were soon replaced with declines. Selllnft pressure let up almost as quickly as It started and . the market coasted along uneventfully. Just before the close de mand showed signs of perking, up.
