S. economic development committee said today, W. Walter Williams of Seattle, Wash., who until recently served as chairman of the CEO, told the 41st international Rotary that there are two fac- tors "pressing hard" toward up setting our economy. He said the factors are: 1. The great demands upon the federal budget which seems to exceed our willingness and our ability to tax ourselves. 2. The relative ease with which prices and wage rates in many parts of the economy move up or are pushed up. "The cold war and domestic pressures have put America's economy under its most terrif ic strain," Williams said. He said the "seriousness of the present situation is the danger ous degree by which the rate of inflation has increased." If the countray fails to stem the tide of present trends, he said, "we stand in grave danger of losing not only our free, un regimented economy, but all of our other free institutions as well." About four cents out of the average U.S. consumer's dollar goes for medical care. Strike Settled In Los Angeles Los Angeles, June 21 U.R) Street cars and busses rolled again today after a five-day op erators' strike which stranded 1,000,000 daily riders of the Los Angeles Transit Lines. Employes voted to accept a two-year contract yesterday and returned to work today.. Al though the AFL transportation union represented 4,000 com pany workers, only 1,375 of them attended a mass meeting. By the vote of acceptance, 753 to 622, it was apparent the new contract which provides for an immediate five-cent-an-hour pay hike and three cents more in a year was not entirely acceptable. Some factions among the workers booed D. D. McClurg, president of the local AFL trans portation union, as he read the terms of the contract. McClurg said despite the number of votes against the pact the entire mem bership would go back to work. The 2,500,000 inhabitants of Hainan Island are mostly Chi nese. June 21 AI.PJ After months of study, Sid Reznlck an nounced today the Reinlck formula for pronouncing British proper names "the older the family, the less the name is pro nounced as it is spelled." This philological discovery, guaranteed to make easier the life of any tourist, stemmed irom inew- fact that Reznick (pronounced Reznick) writes Jokes fpr such people as Al Jolson, Ed Wynn, Milton Berle and Jimmy Dur ante. The events leading up to the Reznick formula were described by his British associate, Sid Colin, who writes Jokes for the British stars. "It was like this," said Colin. Reznick wanted some fancy British name for a script. He saw Col. Leveson-Gower's name in a news item and he asked me how to pronounce it. I did a little checking and advised him it was pronounced loosen-gore. This seemed to excite Rez nick. He asked me how to pro nounce Ayscough, another old family. I wrote back that it was, naturally, pronounced askew. Then he wanted to know how to pronounce Beauchamp, which is, of course beechem. "Why don't they pronounce them like they spell them? Rez nick Inquired. I replied that it was our language and we could pronounce it any way we wanted. It was up to the Junior partner in the language to follow our lead." The titled Clrencesters pro nounce it Sissiter. Cockburn is Coburn. Colquhoun is Cohoon. Hawarden is Harden. Then there is the family MajoribanVs. It sounds like Marshbanks. Menzies is pro nounced Mengls. The Myers coughs call themselves the Mas kews. Meux is Mews. Two gems from the Reznick collection are Tyyrwhitt, pro nounced Territ, and Wriothesley, pronounced Roxley. With such examples Reznick feels that any American can make a good guess at other English names. But he warns against pitfalls, such as Smith Capital Journal, Salem, Ore., Wednesday, June 21, 1950 Vi and Jones. There are places in the upper (social) register where they are pronounced Smythe and ana Johns.
