Bus Trips Are Gay And Informal If you remember the movie It Happened One Night" you know why so many people choose buses to carry them to vacation lands. The film stress ed the informality and friendli ness of riding the highway coaches. Another big factor, of course, is economy. When the driver sings out his call for a "twenty minute stop" passengers know. too, that they can get by on a small investment for lunch. Of more than a billion passen gers who ride the 30,000 inter city buses each year, a large number are summer vacationers. Highway coaches rolled up al most two billion miles last year. Bus lines emphasize "scenic stopovers" along highways that reach almost every part of the country. They stress comfort, too. Most coaches on long runs are air-conditioned. Seats are soft and adjustable, and the new buses have plenty of leg-room. Wide windows frame the pano rama of mountain grandeur or green countryside along the road. If you're going farther, you can make connections with another high way coach to take you on the next segment of your trip. When travel is heavy, most lines ar range for long-distance passen gers to be seated before local riders. Some vacationers say they choose bus travel because they feel at home on the big highway cruisers. Others feel they can see more of the country from a coach window. . For bus enthusiasts, a High way Travelers club was organ ized recently. A non-profit ser vice organization, with head quarters in Chicago, it provides members with a magazine sub scription, travel literature and tour information, maps, courtesy cards and luggage labels. And bus travel has proven so popular, so convenient, and so much a part of customary trans portation that many overseas tourists arrange for bus rides through the European country side as part of their trips. Euro pean bus lines cooperate with railroads and airlines in taking passengers on short, scenic hauls to places of interest.
