Serious Fire v Under Control The first serious forest fire of the season which occurred Tues day afternoon in the C-R it K Lumber company operation in Lane county was being brought under control early Thursday, This early fire emphasized the rapid transition in weather con ditions from one of rain to for est fire danger according to State Forester George Spaur. Very little rain has fallen since May 6 and the humidity has been hovering around the dan ger mark, creating a near mid summer condition In some of the forest districts. The forester Issued a warning to all Oregontans to use extreme caution in the woods since sev eral man-caused fires have oc curred since the closing of the fire season on May 15. "The fire season is only nine dayi old and the first serious fire has burned over 160 acres. We must use every precaution to keep fires out of the timber If Oregon wants to keep in the permanent lumber production business," Spaur said. The United States has approxi mately 1S00 billion board feet of saw timber with about 20 per cent of this figure in the v, state of Oregon. About 88,000 I Oregontans earn a living in the timber industry and the return In new money last year was $707,000,000. 4 The Lane county fire occurred in the C-R & K Lumber com pany operation on Tuesday aft ernoon at 2 p.m. and burned ever 1(0 acres, including some felled and bucked timber. The fire began at the landing, but whether caused by machinery or a cigarette has not yet been De termined. Racing Tip: Rita Doesn't Know Horses London, May It u.
