It was Just year ago today that Big Earl was shot in the back by an unknown gunman as he played poker in a club he owned here. The gunman fired through a window that time, and escaped in the dark. And Little Earl also has been a target for the mystery men who apparently are bent on wip ing out members of the Shelton clan. Little Earl was blasted by eight machine gun sluss last September 10. Neither Big Earl nor Little Earl would say today whether they glimpsed the men who fired at them. Driving the same car in which Little Earl was shot,, they were en route to investigate a report mat one ol Big Earl's oil wells was about to "come through." As they drove through the bot tomlands, the gunmen suddenly fired at them from a clump of bushes. One slug missed Little Earl, who was driving, and hit Big tan in the right arm. 'lying glass cut Big Earl' eyes. Little Earl tramped on the accelerator and the car roared away as the gunmen fired a vol ley of shots after them. The attack occurred near the spot where Big Earl's brother, big Carl Shelton, was killed from ambush October 23, 1947. Little Earl, riding in another car, returned the fire at the men who shot his uncle Carl. A third brother, Bernie She ton, was slain July 28, 1948, by a sniper who fired a single shot from a hillside cemetery and dropped him as he stood outside his roadhouse at Peoria. Big Carl, Big Earl and Ber nie were triumvirate that led an outlaw gang in the roaring twen ties. They specialized in boot legging and rumrunnlng and en gaged in an amazing "war" with a rival gang led by Charley Birger. The two gangs even used a plane and a makeshift tank on enemy "forts."
