MR. BANKS FACES
A GUEST PROBLEM
Kay was alone at the breakfast
table when he came down the next
morning, ieeling as 11 he naa just
returned Irom a three-day college
reunion. Looking nice a May morn
ing, she slipped a piece of bread
Into the toaster for him.
"Hi. Pops."
"Hi. he said Rloomily. He won
dered how it was that women could
to through these shattering emo
tional scenes and bounce up a few
hours later as carelree as a sea
gull behind the Queen Mary. A
thought began to formulate in his
jaded mind. '
"Listen. Kitten. I've got an Idea
but for God's sake don't tell your
mother."
Kaeh white card was . . . debalrd at
lenclb and rrturnrd lo its place
with a slih.
"Of course not. What is it,
Pops?"
"I'll give you and Buckley $1500
to elope."
She looked at him incredulously.
"Are you kidding?"
"No, honest."
"Why, Pops, you must be out of
your mind. Elope? Not have a
wedding? Why, I wouldn't dream
of it! Why, you know Mom would
die if I didn't have a wedding Willi
all the trimmings. I guess I would
too. Not have any friends to sec
me get married and all the people
I've grown up with. Why. it would
not be getting married. Pops. But
youre jusi puwng my leg.
"O.K.," he said. "I Just thought
O.K.
She came around the table and
kissed him on the ear. "You're
aweet, Pops. Only don't stew so
much."
It was decided that one hundred
and fifty was the absolute maxi
mum that could be packed into 24
Maple Drive without physical in
jury. An additional one hundred
might receive invitation to the
church, but certainly not to the
reception.
Thus did not mean, of course,
that the invitations must be limited
to these numbers. Peonle livine
great distances wouldn't show up
ff they were in their right minds,
ao the Bankscs might as well gel
tne credit lor having asked them,
Mr. Banks estimated that they
could also relv on refusals from n
third of the locnl Invitations. On
mat oasis, thev could ask two hun
dred and twenty-five to both the
church and the reception and one
hundred and fifty additional Just, to
the church.
To Mrs. Banks, who was used to
ntertainmg on a retail level, this
seemed like a stneeer ne number
She proposed that each one mnke
a separate list Just the people they
really wanted.
This task occupied a harmoni
ous evening.
Mrs. Banks Jotted down the names
or aJl living relatives and her mem
ory was encyclopedic), plus her spe
cial cronies in the Garden and
Bridn clubs
Kay put down the classmates who
had written fatuous messages nrrrnss
her photograph in her copy of the
Heathwood Hall class album, alt the
young men who had ever asked
her lo ma lor football en met nnri
people whom she had visited for
more tnan two davs. in a burst of
gratitude she threw In the fathers
ana mothers of those whn hart nut
her up (or vice versa) for more than
a week.
Mr. Banks thought in terms of
oiq rnenns. As his memory lim
bered up. their dim forms passed
before him almost faster than he
could write them down. By the time
he had finished with World War
I his heart was overflowing with
good-fellowship.
He spent the followine evening
combining the lists. There were
alarmingly few duplications. Ap
parently the members of the names
family had no friends in common.
Finallv he turned to his wife and
daughter with a sadistic leer. "Guess
how many."
Mrs. Banks squirmed uneasily
"Two hundred?" she ventured,
without conviction.
"Five hundred and seventv-two,"
shouted Mr. Banks triumphantly,
Five! Seven! Two! What did I tell
you?"
Mrs. Hanks Kraooea the lists.
Nonsense. You've done something
wrong. I'll bet I can cut this down.
Now look here, we certainly don't
need to nave the sparkmans. we
never see them and as for that
dyed-haired woman I don't care if
I ever have her in my house again."
Mr. Banics wondered why it was
that, every time he discovered an
attractive woman, Mrs. Banks said
her hair was dyed. And anyway what
if it was? "Listen." he said. He was
dignified now; cool, austere and
on guard. "Do you realize that Harry
Sparkman is one of my most inti
mate friends, to say nothing of being
a very good client?"
"How ridiculous, you hardly ever
see him. We can ask them to the
church."
"The church!" cried Mr. Banks.
"You mean to say you want to ask
Harry and Jane Sparkman to the
church and not to the house? Did
they ask us just to the church when
their daughter got married? No.
And you were delighted to go to the
reception. The church!"
The following evenintr Mr. Banks
returned with a card file and large
quantities of three-by-five cards.
The pink are for 'church on v "
he explained.
"The white ones are 'churnh and
and reception.' Now here's a rubber
stamp. Whenever you're sure some
one can't come stamp that card 'P.
rv. u: i hat means probably not
coming.' '

Three niithts iater everyone's
name had been written on a pink

ook the second census.
"Here's the box score," he an
nounced at last. Ten people have)
been asked to the church and not the
reception. Five hundred and sixty
two have been asked to both. There
are one hundred and fifty two cards
stamped 'P. N. C That leaves four

show up. Figuring that a third of
them won't.vou'll have two hundred

people out on their necks."
Kay yawned. I m going to bed.
My list is right down to the bone. I
so I can't be of any help." She

we can work it out" said Mrs.
Banks. "Kay s upset. All we have
to do is to shift these superfluous
people over lo Hie church and not
Invite them to the reception."
Each white card was removed
from the box, debated at length,
and returned to its original place
with a sigh. At the end of each
