Farmers, (in boat) searched the area for livestock stranded by the flood. (AP Wirephoto) Federal Aid Sought to Wage ar on Spruce Washington, Nov. 30 Jf) An budworm Infestation in Washington and Oregon is to be waged next year if the federal government makes funds available. Rep. Holmes (R., Wash.), announced this today through his office. Holmes said an appropriationt of $880,000 is being urged. He said speedy action will be need ed after congress meets in Janu ary, as the spraying program which is planned must be done in May and June to be effective. Oregon has set aside S187.00U and Washington $18,000 and pri vate interests have pledged $105,000 to make up a $1,200,000 program, he said. The plan is to spray DDT Irom planes on the most critically in fected areas in the two states, East of the Cascade mountains. This year in May and June the forest service, the tsates and private interests cooperated In spraying 275,000 acres. Terming this a success, the service said it wants to carry on the work on a large scale next year. From a small infected area in 1944 the budworm has become epidemic in the Douglas and white fir forests of the two states over 2,267,000 acres, with wholesale destruction of lumber threatened, the service said. Officials of Walla Walla, Wash., have urged Holmes to request immediate action to save the city's watershed In the Blue mountains. ALFRED MUNDT City Recorder City of Salem, Oretaa Bud worm all - out effort to stop the spruce Mayor R. V. Borleske of Wal la Walla wrote Holmes he had made a trip through the water shed and that the destruction of trees is alarming. A committee of all interests concerned in the fight on the budworm has reported to gov ernment officials that unless the program begun this year is continued on an expanded scale "and aggressively carried out, vast losses of timber within the next two or three years seem inevitable." This committee reported that virtually all fir timber in the Blue mountains is infested and said that serious infestations also have occurred in commercial stands of timber in western Ore gon and the Oregon cascades. Only western Washington, it said, has escaped the epidemic infestation. MARKET Completed from report! of Salem dealen loi we sin dance or Capital Journal Readeil. (Revised dillr).
