The U.S. joint chiefs of staff, '.who are on a 10-day tour of Alaska's defenses, left here to day for Fairbanks, Adak, Shem a and Kodiak. Gen. Omar Bradley, chair man, said in a press conference yesterday that the joint staff was in Alaska to find out exactly what the territory needed in ad ditional defense installations. Air Force Chief Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenburg echoed Gen. Brad ley's comments, adding that Alaska was considered one of the most important points in the U.S. defense system. The group dodged a question regarding the air force's propos ed shift of Boeing military air plane production from Seattle to the midwest because the que ry was considered "too hot to answer at this time." Gen. Lawton Collins, chief of staff of the U.S. army, indicated the army is not vitally interested in construction of a railroad to the territory from the United States. He said such a railroad would be helpful but not essen tial from a military viewpoint. Vice Adm. Arthur D. Struble, representing the navy, said it was too early to comment on the possible value of oil discov eries in the Point Barrow region. Prune Picking Peak Reached Dallas, Sept. 8 Prune pick ing is at its peak in the Dallas area and despite the low prices for the fruit, a large majority of the growers are harvesting their crops. Matt Mochel, in charge of a temporary farm labor office set up in the o f f i c e of the Polk county agent, said . Wednesday morning that he could place 150 more pickers. Most of these are for "drlveouts" but some grow ers have cabins where the pick ers may reside for the duration of the harvest. It is estimated that picking will continue from ten days to two weeks. Prunes are generally very good, although perhaps slightly smaller than in some former years. Most orchards are fairly heavily loaded. In order that pickers might earn more, some growers have arranged for the workers to shake as well as pick, giving them SO cents per box on the combined work as compared with IB cents per box for pick ing alone. BRADFORD London, Sept. 8 U.R) High diplomatic quarters revealed today that Britain will bluntly tell the United States at the Washing ton conference that America must be ready to take a big share of Britain's costly responsibilities in the Far East. Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin, it was said, will tell Secre tary of State Dean Acheson that' Britain's severe economic cri sis makes it impossible for her to continue single handed for stop - Communism expenditures in wide areas of the troubled Far East. Bevin, it was recalled, made a similar appeal to President Truman in 1947, when he said Britain could no longer afford to arm Greece and Turkey. Bennett, perfume manu facturer whose name has figured prominently in the "five per center" inquiry, said today that "Cheap partisan politicians" are using Maj. Gen. Harry H. Vaughan to embarrass President Truman. In a copyrighted interview with the Holland Sentinel, the ailing Bennett said senate in vestigators are "trying to use me the same way, but they aren't going to get away with it." With the Washington talks all set to begin, it was abundantly clear that the British delegation would count on political rather than wholly economic argu ments in an effort to ease the drain of Britain's ever-dwindling gold and dollar reserves. It can be stated that in Bev in's eyes, Britain makes a ma jor contribution to the United States defense by its support of the economics of India, Paki stan, Ceylon and Malaya, prin- "Sure I talked to Vaughan," Bennett told the Sentinel re porters. "I've known him since about five months before the end df the war. I know Truman, too. I was in his office one hour before he became president." "Vaughan helped me see the right people so I wouldn't be pushed around by clerks. Ev erybody does the same thing. If you want something, you ask someone like Vaughan or your senator who to see." He invited the senate investi gations subcommittee to come to Saugatuck to take his testi mony, if necessary. "I'll pay their expenses," he offered. "That's all bunk about me be ing made sick by the investiga tion," the reporters quoted Ben nett. "Hell, I've been sick since last spring." The Sentinel story said Ben nett had suffered three heart attacks since last spring and is now recovering from a siege of virus pneumonia. Discussing h i s forthcoming appearance before the investiga tors, Bennett said: "I'm going to talk just like (planemaker Howard) Hughes did (in the 1947 war contract in quiry.) He made them look like a bunch of monkeys." Bevin will say that if the United States accepts a share of these responsibilities commen surate with her world position, Britain would be able to devote greater attention and energy to tackling the dollar shortage. Britain is generally re garded as more anxious than the United States to establish some semblance of relations with the Communist regime. Informed quarters here con tend that without American help to Britain, the world may well become split economically into three spheres the dollar area, the sterling area, and the ruble bloc consisting of Russia and her satellites.
