20 Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon, Thursday, July 21, 1949 1 Bom of the Storm By SIDNEY B. CARTER Prlscilla stared at the letter in her hand. Tne suaaen man oi dilu tion at the sieht of it left her weak, and trembling. Perhaps Den nis was coming back. Why else would he send her a special delivery letter? With shaking hands Prlscilla slit the envelope and took out the let ter. It was very snori. "My dearest Friend," It began. Prlscllla's hopes sanx. "Your fa ther wrote me of your unhappi ness and asked me whether I could not make some further ex planation to you in regard to my decision to go away from River dale." Oh. Dad. how could you do such a thing? I have some pride left. "Your father is worried about you and. indeed, after reading his letter, so am I. I assure you that I think more or you than of any other girl on this earth and if I have brought you unhapplness by my actions, I could not do other wise. It was. and is, by belief that by staying with you I should bring 1 you more unhapplness than ever. This restlessness possesses me more than ever As her father went after hit hat, r-nsciua neara jjorraine say some thing to James about "private con versation that we shouldn't hear, I suppose." Prlscilla paid no attten tlon and. in a moment, she and her father were walking down the street together. "Well, what is it. daughter?" her father aeked, drawing her arm uutukh nu. i anow uteres, some-1 thing on your mind." "The something is Kenneth." Her father lnterruoted her. "Be fore we continue the discussion) aDout Kenneth." he said, in the funny, pedantic way he sometimes had he taught hlstorv at tha hluhl school "tell me how you feel about ijennu now," Why ... I don't know." she stammered, and then pride had ius way wnn ner. "I can do with out Dennis." she said in as off hand a manner as she could man age. They walked in silence for awhile. "Let's co in the drug store and have some ice cream." her father suggested. As they entered the brightly lighted place and sat down In a booth in the Back of the store, Prlscilla smiled at her father. He Prlscilla. blinded bv tears, turned was such a darllngl When she was out the light and grouped her way a small girl and something or fiumeuuuy naa nurt ner, me panacea to the stairs Restless, restless, restless sighed the June breezes that night. Rest' less means no rest. No rest, no rest for Dennis. No rest for Prlscilla, ... At nine o'clock a stream of sunlight and the aching of her shoulder muscles brought her back to the world of reality. When she opened her eyes, she saw Drusle standing beside the bed. "Mother says you'd better get up," Drusle informed ner. "Mother says It's late." Prlscilla squinted at the little flink enamel clock on her dress ng table. "It's only nine o'clock," she said. "Anyway, I was out late last night." "I know, that's why Mother's mad," said Drusle. "Besides, you're wanted on tne teeipnone." It was Kenneth's voice Prlscilla heard when she picked up the tele phone in the downstairs hallway. "Why, hello, Kenneth, how are you7" "How are you?" Kenneth's tone was one of contribution. 'That. more to the point!" "I'm fine." lied Prlscilla. Her shoulders were painfully stiff. i never ieit better in my me: There was no need to tell him otherwise. Kenneth's voice was bright with relief. "I'm so glad," he said. "Then . . . then how about a date to night?" "Sorry," said Prlscilla. "You should have asked me sooner." That was true. She had promised ttaymona a ciate tonignt. "Well, how about tomorrow night?" "I have a date tomorrow night, too. That's the honest truth, Kenneth." There was silence for a moment and then Kenneth spoke apolo getically, his short spell of temper over. "Gee. Prlscilla. when are you going to oe my giriv ' "Not," said Prlscilla, "until you get over being Jealous." "Well," said Kenneth, "could I have a date the night after the night after tonight?" "Yes." said Prlscilla matching tua ciauui&beueas wiui ner own. "Yes. I think that could be ar ranged. I also thing It could be a lot of fun." She hung up the receiver, chuckling to herself. "Prlscilla Haydenl" her mother ailed from the kitchen. "Just a minute! Did I hear vou making a date for tonight with that stupid Kent person?" "No. Mother." said Prlscilla. "I have a date with Raymond." "Well, that's better." said Mrs Hayden. Prlscilla went on upstairs. There was no point in telling about a couple of nights hence, when she would have a date with Kenneth Kent. Her mother would evidently be annoyed, had been annoyed by yesterday's plcnlo date. She won dered what her father thought. She must find out. That evening after dinner, she cornered her father and playfully took his newspaper away from him. Let's take a walk. Beautiful JllKHI.. From the light that leaped im mediately Into his tired eyes, Prls cilla knew how much nnv Email attention meant to her father. She anew aiso. mat sue had been ne glecting him. "Why, I'd like to," he said, "but I thought you'd be out with some young man this eve ning. "Raymond isn't coming until half past eight. We have time." had been to go to the drug store ana nave some ice cream. Mr. Havden chatted of many things, seemingly Irrelevant, as they ate their ice cream. He mentioned the fact that, while she had been a great disaODOintment to him an s. student of history, she was undeni ably excellent in her English classes. He wanted her to do something with that ability. She must go to busi ness school and learn stenography. "So many young girls, who don't know a complete sentence frnm n complete Idiot, go to business school," he told her humorously. "You'll be the exception. You'll be in oemana as a secretary." "Will I?" Prlscilla had not. thought she would ever be "In demand" as an oince worker. The idea in trigued her. "Will I, really, Dad?" "Definitely." h lusiirRri hpr "vn will be the rara avis." It was not until thev had al most reached their home that in question of Kenneth came up again. It was agreed between them that Prlscilla would enter business school in tne ran. ene would take frnm September until the following June w uumuieie ner course.
