BETTER'N JERKY OR TURKEY Cherk Fattened on Engadines For Voyageurs at Promenade Baby cherk meat will be the delicacy on which voyageurs of the 40 et 8 will feed at the grand poemanade banquet here on Au gust 2, just before the state Legion convention. The cherk has been held in captivity here for 10 years but a 10-year-old cherk isn't old and tough. He corresponds in' age to a yeaning siter, During the 10 years the cherk has been fed almost exclusively on engadines, of which cherks are especially fond. Cherk meat dried and smoked is call ed "cherky," not to be confused with "jerkey" or turkey. But the cherk meat to be served the voyageurs will not be dried. It will-be juicy steaks just off the grill. Here's more about the animal in a letter that has gone out to the voyageurs from Ethan Grant, the check's keeper: "A 10-year-old secret can now be told. Late in 1939 two Ore gon voyageurs on a fishing trip near Prestoria captured a young cherk, one of the rarest known animals on earth. They didn't know for a long time what it was. But these two men, Bra zier Small, now Chef de Gare of Voiture 133, and Sephus Starr, new commander-elect of Capi tal Post B, Salem, did know they had an oddity. "Ascertaining its sex, they f V named the younk cherk "Esker, "For reasons of their own, but probably because they were un able to identify Esker with the game laws, they decided to keep him a secret. Since then, they, and Esker, have had some note worthy experiences. 'They were first confronted with what to feed the little ani mal. They tried just about everything from salmonberries to powdered china doorknobs Esker weighed around four pounds at the time, and was los ing rapidly. "It was at this point that Braizer and Sephus took Ira (Fog) Pilcher into their con fidence. Pilcher claims he can do anything he sets his mind to. and he frequently proves it. He didn't know anything at all about a cherk, but he soon solv ed its food problem. He dis covered, somehow, that Esker would thrive on engadines, al though Pilcher didn't know at the time what an engadine was. The only place In the world where you can find an engadine Is in Northern Michigan. Pil cher got a supply and it has since been the only food Esker nas eaten. , . . It will be near Highway 99E where it may be seen by tour ists and other drivers on the highway. A concrete foundation is be ing laid for the car. In It will be embedded two steel rails on which the car will set, en closed by a chain barrier. A concrete walk will surround the spot. The car was given the Ore gon grand voiture in a Salem ceremony at the time the mer cl train of gifts from the peo ple of France to the people of the United States was receiv ed in this country. This par ticular car brought the gifts distributed in Oregon. Angel The flax festival displays in the city hall will have added interest this year for, beside the usual flax and flax product exhibits there will be a garden section and all gar den lovers are invited to com pete for worthwhile cash prizes. There are three divisions: flower arrangements for indi viduals; vegetable arrangements for individuals; and flower ar rangements for garden clubs. Each club will be allotted six feet of space. Three cash prizes will be awarded in each division. Mrs. O. J. Williams is chairman of the committee in charge of the exhibits. Mt. Angel Garden club mem bers met Tuesday afternoon to make flax corsages which will again be sold by the club this year. The little corsages of golden flax balls proved very popular last year. Mrs. Ben Traviss is chairman of the cor sage committee. The garen club will also enter a float In the grand parade on Capital Journal. Salem.
