Bridges to Go
To Honolulu
San Francisco, July 7 U.
Federal Judge Michael J. Roche
today refused Harry Bridges'
bid to attend a world federation
of trade unions convention in
France.
But Bridges won a partial vic
tory, when government attor
neys said they had no objection
to his making a trip, within the
next three weeks, to Hawaii in
connection with the current
longshore strike there.
Ten days ago Bridges, under
indictment for perjury and con
spiracy, was refused permission
to leave the country, but Roche
granted a new hearing for today.
The union offered to post
$100,000 bail to guarantee
Bridges' return here for trial.
Government attorneys said this
was meaningless and that "un
foreseen circumstances" might
keep him in France even if the
bond posted were a million dol
lars.
