Iramatic soprano of Radio City fame, "was home" to sing to home- lolk. And a near capacity crowd' Las on hand to greet and ac- laim the charming singer yhose career in music began in Ealem. The first two groups of songs, ncluding several numbers in erman, were especially pleas- ng because of the opportunity hey offered to present the va- ied range, the richness of voice nd the warmth of tone marking ttliss Cummings' singing. Audi- nce favorites in this group in luded Dowland's old English umber, "Come Again, Sweet Love," and the Goethe Wolf dumber, "In dem Schutten mein fer Locken." For the third part of the pro- Sram came the more dramatic lumber of the evening, Wagner's Aria "Elnsam in truban Tagen" Elsa's Dream from Lohengrin. Her interpretative performance was Ivarmly received last evening. A group of French songs fol lowed the intermission, and for the final group several shorter numbers highlighted by Scott's liUllaoy," especially suited to Miss Cumminffft' vnipe nnH n North Carolina mountain song, by Bartholomew. The added five encores warm ed the hearts, Miss Cummings breaking away from the more formalized program and playing her" own accompaniment for four of these numbers. The first two were short, whimsical little songs, one dedicated to all mo thers with small sons, the other to all red-headed, curly-haired little boys. Following these she sang "Sweetest Story Ever Told," in dedication to her great aunt, Mrs. Laura B. Noyes. For the fourth encore, ac companied by Mrs. Underwood again, Miss Cummings sang the old favorite Negro spiritual, "Oh Lord I Want to Be," and as the last number, "Only," playing her own accompaniment. Following the concert. Miss Cummings and Mrs. Underwood were feted at an informal recep tion at the Bruce Spaulding home, a large group of friends calling to greet the musicians and to extend best wishes to Miss Cummings as she returns to the east. She has received a call to return to .Radio City, thus can- ceiling plans for a further short visit with her parents here. Only recently she finished 13 weeks at Radio City Music hall and had made an album of wedding rec ords for RCA Victor with Rich ard Liebert playing organ ac companiment. Crescendo club has had an outstanding series this year and patrons are enthusiastic in look ing to next year's series with special acclaim to Miss Lena Belle Tartar, adviser and direc tor'of music for this unique high school musical group. The Maryland department of education has to serve 21,000 pounds of the dried fruit to school kids in the next few weeks, whether the youngsters like it or not. One of the department's offi cials, Charles W. Sylvester, ex plained the prunes were sent here under terms of the federal lunch-money program. SALEM PIE COMPANY Ph. 14010 1197 Chemeketa Scouts to Paint 1000 Air Markers Washington, Feb. 13 UP) Boy Scouts are going to paint 1000 air markers on rooftops to help guide private fliers across the country. The project was announced today by the civil aeronautics administration, which will sup ervise the work of the 1,500,000 scouts. The markers will show the direction and distance to the nearest airport; fix the location of the marker in terms of lon gitude and latitude; and give the name of the community in which the marker is located. Van Wieder Home Has Fire Damage The home of Mr. and Mrs. Van Wieder at 885 North Sum mer street was seriously dam aged by fire early Friday morning. The fire was discovered about 4 o'clock when Mrs. Van Wieder awoke and noticed an odor of smoke, and fire was discovered in the attic. The fire was show ing through the roof when fire equipment arrived. The fire started in the attic which was used as a storage room, and stored materials made some difficulty for the firemen who did not leave the scene un til after daylight. Floors and walls' in the upper part of the house and the roof were dam aged, and there was considerable water damage in the lower part of the house. Cause of the fire is not defi nitely known, but electrical wir ing defect was suspected. Wieder praised the fire de partment for the way in which it covered furniture and worked fo prevent further damage. Sears Estate Lands Sold, Over 400 Acres in Deal Announcement was made Friday of the sale of the extensive valley floor farm lands and upland wooded highlands of some 415 acres known over the past 90 years as the J. K. Sears estate lands. This tract lies Just four miles road. This tract has a magnifl eant view ot the valley. C. W. Stuller, broker, on Wallace road, Salem, handled all matters connected with these transactions. Lebanon Home Burns -Lebanon, Ore., Feb. 13 UJ9- Capital Journal, Salem, Ore., Friday, February 13, 194813 northwest from Salem and parallel to State Highway 221, better known as Wallace road. Michigan City road leading from the Paul Wallace orchards farm and the Singer Rose gar dens bisects the 415 acres from the east while Brush Col-lege-Zena road forms the west boundary for a long distance. Sellers were Walter Earl Sears and wife of Portland, Mr. and Mrs. George Kinman of California and Charles L. Wal ker, insurance man of Hllls boro. All were heirs of the J. K Sears estate either directly or through marriage, thus this is the first time that any of the property holdings has gone out of the family name ownership. Improvements Made Buyers were Mr. and Mrs. Willis A. Byers of Wallace road and Lincoln communities and Cecil W. Stuller, real estate op erator of Salem and Wallace road. The Byers already own and operate a large farm adjoining the Sears farm lands. They have already made a great many bet terments in new fences, drain age canals, clearing of land and readying the cultivated valley floors lands for cropping. This new addition to their holdings makes their aggregate acreage well over 440 acres in all. They get 320 acres of the Sears lands. Mr. Stuller was deeded the southern timbered upland end of the tract amounting to some 87 acres. The valuable stand of fir timber has been sold to the West Salem Lumber company of West Salem. This is rapidly being converted into lumber in their mills on Wallace road at West Salem. Since the tract is close to Sa lem and West Salem, is served by most Salem routes, power lines and many roads and has a commanding view over Salem and its environs it is quite likely that the tract will be subdivided later when surveyed and clear ed. Another Deal Announced Another Polk county sale of real estate in the West Salem and Eola hills area was the dis posal of the 20-acre Jay R Nedry and wife country home to Chief P. A. Raney and wife of 1880 North 22nd street, Sa lem. Raney is chief or com manding officer of the navy re cruiting service at Salem post office. He is soon eligible for retirement after a lifetime ser vice in the U. S. navy. The new Raney home is part of the old James and Anna Stewart estate lands embracing the tract on which is located the old Stewart mansion and out buildings. Location is just a few hundred yards east from Popcorn school four miles west from Salem on Orchard Heights The four-room home of an el derly couple, Mr. and Mrs. N. E.
