Salem, Oregon, Monday, Jan. 13, 1947 Three Damage Actions Filed Albany Damages totaling $90,300 are asked in three cases filed Saturday in circuit court here, two of them involving the Southern Pacific Railway com pany. Xe two cases in which the Southern Pacific and a railway engineer, H. R. Mix, are named defendants arose from the acci dent in which Mrs. Elsie Anne Pearce was killed at a grade crossing in Harrisburg, Septem ber 5, 1946. Plaintiffs in these cases are James Allen Pcaree and Bev erly Anne Pearce, children of Mrs. Pearce, each represented by a guardian ad litem, Leon ard F. Pearce, their father. Damages of $20,050 are asked in the youth's behalf and of $20,150 in behalf of his sister, both of whom, it is asserted, suffered permanent injuries. In the third case Mrs. Lois Elaine Hall asks damages of $50,000 from Harry C. Murphy et al, doing business as the Mur phy Timber company, and Ros coe Morrison because of the fatal injuries suffered by her husband, Virgil Hall, when he was thrown from a truck owned and operated by the defendants on a private logging road. The plaintiff alleges that the truck was carelessly driven in such a manner that it skidded. Hall was required to ride in an unsafe position behind the cab of the truck, the plaintiff asserts. Home Demonstration jram Is Filled Dallas Polk County hime ex tension units will have demon strations on "Handle With Care" by Mrs. Viola B. Shaffer, Home Demonstration Agent. M. G. Mrs. Shaffer will demonstrate clothing care to the West Salem Home extension unit Tuesday, January 14, at the West Salem City Hall at 1:30 p. m. and to the Kingwood Heights unit on Wednesday, January 15 at 1:30 at Mrs. Vina Coffcl's residence on Glen Creek Road. West West Salem. Cropsey will give pointers on home presser units on Tuesday night at the Ameri can Legion Hall in Monmouth at 7:30 p. m. Stayton High School Gets New Equipment Stayton New equipment is being added to the Stayton high school, according to principal G. W. Ayres. A Standard fluid process du plicator has been bought for the office and is a great Improve ment over other methods of pro ducing copies from carbon. It will help greatly in preparing examination papers. The home economics depart ment has received a nine cubic foot deluxe refrigerator which Unionvale Mrs. Henry Knoche of this district, Mrs. Will Duren of Hopewell, Mrs. J. W. Versteeg of Fairview, teachers in Dayton and Perrydale schools, attended the January meeting of the Teachers' club held at the home of Rev. and Mrs. R. B. Shoun in McMinnville. The round-table discussion was "the new text books to start using in schools next year." Dean Harrison on leave from San Diego, Calif., navy base was a guest of friends here Monday and Tuesday. He also was a guest of his aunt, Mrs. George Westfall and Miss Jeanne West fall at McMinnville. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Launer and family were New Year's eve guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Herman at McMinnville. William O. Fowler was a week-end guest of his nephew Floyd E. Fowler and family at Clackamas. Union Hill Grange Club Entertained Union Hill The Union Hill Grange Home Economic club met at the home of Mrs. Byron McElhaney with Mrs. A. N. Doerfler, co-hostess. A no-host luncheon was served. Miss Alice Jaquet, president, conducted the business meeting in the afternoon. Appointed to prepare the exhibit table for the next Grange meeting were Mrs. W. F. Krenz, Mrs. W. M. Tale, and Miss Jeanne Darby. Antiques will be displayed. Mrs. Floyd Fox presented a program of readings and con tests on health. Mrs. J. C. Krenz won high honors in the health quizz. Child Study Group Hears Broadcasts Silverton Mrs. Gordon Van Cleave, room-mother chairman of the Parent-Teacher child study group, opened her home for the listening and discussion study hour of the KOAC broad cast at 2 o'clock on the year's general theme: "Behavior in the Making." The general chairman of the local PTA child study group, is Mrs. Harry Vctler with Mrs. VanClcavo divisional chairman. Mrs. Veller is arranging at least four divisional groups to function every Wednesday afternoon al 2 o'clock in listen ing to different child programs broadcast. Mrs. Olc Meland, president of the PTA is empha sizing educational supervision of primary and pre-school aged children as well as the teen agers. Mrs. Vic Grossnickle secre tary of the group will open her home in South Water sheet for the February meeting. Mrs. Van Cleave served refreshments. Vrs. Ted Rutherford is publicity t-airman for the primary club. Wind Cave, the most widely known of the many caverns in l!ic Black Hills area, has been explored for a distance of 10 miles. Legion Talks New Building Woodburn Woodburn post No. 46 of the American Legion met in regular session Wednes day evening, with Commander Joe Kirsch presiding. A number of reports were given, including a report on the successful entertainment by Harold Ingram, on the Christ mas dance by Arvid Ostrom, and on the children's Christmas party by Howard Butterfield. Announcement was made of the county council to be held at St. Paul Friday evening, Janu ary 17. Delegates are Joe Kirsch, Milton Coy, H. H. Hen ry, Melvin Johnson and Floyd Maricle. Alternates are Arvid Ostrom, Arvid Ostrom, Adrian Schooler, Hartley LeFebvre, Marvin Moore and Cornelius Donnelly. The post is now ready to pay off the mortgage on its property on the highway and building plans for the new home were discussed. A building commit tee was appointed to look into the matter, which includes Ar. vid Ostrom, O. H. Boje, H. H Henry, Marvin Moore, E. J Hughes, Bob Jackson, Thomas Cross, Floyd Maricle, Harold In. gram and Herbert Hoyt. Gifts from the vice slate com mander of Oregon were present ed to members who have secur ed 15 new members or renewals during the year. Those receiv ing gifts were Arvid Ostrom, Marvin Moore, Kenneth Schiel, H. S. LeFebvre and Milton Coy. A number of others are working towards this goal and will soon be eligible for gifts. The mem bership now totals 269. The next meeting will be January 22, with a program and moving pictures to follow the short business meeting. A Lin coln program is being prepared for the February 12 meeting. A number of members will go to Silverton Friday of this week to attend the meeting of the Marion County Veterans' asso ciation. Refreshments were served by the auxiliary. Brush College Men Give Grange Program Brush College Annual men's night at Brush College Grange was a decided success with the supper and program directed by the men under the chairmanship of Charles Glaze and Jess Hun ley, Jr. On the program Assistant County Agent Dawson showed tuioreu Hiiues 01 rJin cuuniy farms and gave a talk of gener al interest concerning stock, hay and grain crops as well as dif ferent types of soil, seeds. Brush Cailege Grange Master Mrs. W. D. Henry conducted the business meeting after the pro gram. I Turner Mutual Phone Line Reduces Dues Turner The Turner Mutual Telephone company held a! stockholders meeting Tuesday I evening, reelecting the old! board of officers. Dues were reduced from $7.77 lo $5 per quarter, as material will become available. New lines will replace the old ones. A new survey is being made on streets and to establish ac curate property lines. Timm Will Direct Campaign for Dimes Woodburn George Timm, lo cal florist, has been appointed chairman of the Rotary club committee to conduct the Wood burn 1947 "March of Limes" campaign, announced this week by H. F. Butterfield, club pres ident. The drive will open January IS and continued through Janu ary 30 to raise funds to combat infantile paralysis.
