today although numerous lead

Grains Hove in
Narrow Ranqe
Chicago, Oct. 26 OP) Grains
moved within a narrow range
today and trading was on a re
duced level. Corn was under
moderate pressure most of the
session, reflecting fairly liberal
arrivals in cars and an expan
sion of offerings by the coun
try. Wheat shower more strength
than corn, although trade was
light. Prospects of an early
settlement of the maritime
strike created some buying by
local traders. Oats, lower early,
rallied toward the close when
a short covering movement got
underway in the nearby deliver
ies. Cash dealers reported they
purchased more than 200,000
bushels of corn on a to-arrive
basis from the country.
Wheat closed unchanged to a
cent higher, January $2.02, corn
was lower to higher, Jan
uary $1.365s-34, and oats were
Vi lower to 1 cent higher, No

79,698 Bales Oregon
Hops Certified
Official certificates on 79,698
bales of the Oregon, 1946, hop
crop had been issued by the state
hop analytical laboratory up to
the close of work October 24,
the state department of agricul
ture reported Friday.
Analyses for leaf, stem and
seed content on that many bales
were run through in two days
less than two months to make a
record performance in the three
seasons the laboratory has been
in operation.
The laboratory has just about
completed the season's work,
with A. J. Fleming who is in
charge estimating that official
samples will be drawn on only
another six or seven thousand
bales of hops.

20 Americans
Defy the Army
Rome, Oct. 26 (IP) Twenty
civilian employes of the U.S.
army, remaining in their rooms
in the luxurious Hotel Excelsior
in defiance of orders, were or
dered today to leave or face dis
charge for insubordination.
Col. Charles Deashcr, Rome
area commander, informed the
resistors in a letter that their
refusal lo meet the midnight
deadline last night for moving
to another hotel constituted
"willful" disobedience.
The spokesman for (he civi
lians has said that only force
would induce them lo give up
their well-appointed rooms in
the uptown hotel for the. much
less luxurious accommodations
of the Hotel Nuova Roma.
Of 44 who originally refused
to change over to less preten
tious quarters, army spokesmen
said half had checked out by
midnight. But Sheldon Mag
wood of New York City, "re
sistance" group leader, said he
knew of only 10 that had done
so.
In final checkout notices yes
terday, the army said the civi
lians might take apartments or
move lo Hote Nuova Roma,
which some had termed second
rate. The army said "crowded con
ditions in the Excelsior" were
the reason for the notices. The
civilians said they were being
ordered out to make room for
families of high-ranking offi
cers. Aschenbrenner Heads
