14 Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon, Monday, Oct. 21, 1916 100 Vets Take Flight Courses ,v One hundred Salem veterans of World War II have taken to the air under the GI bill of rights and arc now taking flight training at the Salem Air Serv ice school at McNary field. Of the group 80 are taking the private flying course; five, the commercial course; eight, the inst uctors' course; five, the instrument course; and two the multi-engines course. Twelve planes are used at the school in training the men and seven pilots, having a total of over 17.000 hours of instruc tion time, arc employed by the school. Five ol the seven in structors, Glenn Fravel, Chuck Pillclte, Mclvin Holt, Phil Boy cr and Paul Harrison, were pi lots with some branch of the armed forces during the war. The other two, John Hughes and Wally Tower, were test pi lots with aircraft companies. The school began its veter an training program July 1, 1946, and last week enrolled its 100th student. October 28 it is planned to start a ground school at Willamette university ,that will be open to veterans and the general public. The SO hour course will offer instruction in navigation, meteorology, civil air regulations, radio and aircraft.
