Bids on old crop corn were slightly lower and ranged down to 1.78 for 10 days shipment. Some buyers did not bid new crop corn, apparently waiting for the price control decision next week. Both cash wheat and oats held steady to yesterday's prices with number 1 red wheat selling at 2.02 in the local carlot market and number 1 while oats at 77 to 78 'h. Prlzci of $10, Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon, PICKERS STREAMING TO INDEPENDENCE Independence, Aug. 10 In anticipation of hop picking mi grant workers are streaming into Independence in large numbers. A. C. (Dinty) Moore of the farm labor office said the season was scheduled to get under way in the next week or 10 days. While waiting for the season to open most of the workers are being sent to the bean yards around Salem and Stayton. Many of them are being housed in the magrant workers' camp at Salem. Hop yards in the Independ ence area expect to begin pick ing early hops by August 20. Bean Pickers Shortage Starts The surplus of pickers that has existed since the crop of snap beans began coming off the vines a couple of weeks ago has changed into a shortage almost over night, according to reports from the Chemeketa street farm labor office. The recent warm days have acted lo speed the ripening process. The first picking has virtually been cleared off in all of the valley yards, which means that workers will be able to do much better from now on. As an example of the sudden change from surplus to shortage of workers, the labor office re ported 10 growers were in Fri day morning seeking pickers. Saturday forenoon this number had grown to 21 and three trucks had to leave empty hand ed. The office could have plac ed at least 180 additional work ers. Sunday picking will be avail able in at least three yards since thai number of growers have in dicated they will provide trans portation from the farm labor office. Pickers intending to go into the bean patches should be on the sidewalk in front of the office between 6:30 and 7 a.m., wilh their lunches. An additional bean patch that needs 40 pickers will open Mon day. A picking wage of 2'.i cents per pound with a U cent bonus for those who re.nain through lo the end of the sea son was established a few weeks ago. This is a '.' cent more than a year ago. Since picking of early hops is scheduled to begin next week, real labor shortage Is antici pated.
