First of Transient Farm Workers Due Coming Week The first of llio transient farm laborers to be brought into Mhi--ion county this summer for field, orchard and cannery work, probably will move into the barracks buildings on the east side of Turner road at Salem airport next week, Guy N. Hickok, one of the directors of the Salem Agricultural Housing corpora tion, told the Chamber of Com merce directors Wednesday night. Water extensions to the build ings have been made and re modeling is under way, he said. The first workers to arrive will be employed as cherry pick ers. Stress is to be placed on the manufacture of ammonium sul phate fertilizer, though the ex perimental test of alumina ex traction from clay will continue, Alumina extraction has al ready been accomplished in a limited degree, and some change in machinery and processing methods may be necessary n the alumina operation. The plant is making a strong bid to turn out a large part of the 50,000 or 75,000 tons of ammonium sulphate that UNRRA is demanding for use in foreign countries, and as a re sult of the RFC approval it is said the present capacity of 120 tons of the fertilizer per day will be increased to 250 or 300 tons. The number of persons em ployed at the plant will remain at about 250, it was said. Mint Is Thriving Unionvale Peppermint is thriving at the R. T. Kidd farm, where hoeing (he crop is in progress. Sign Installation Meets Complications The Chamber of Commerce is having trouble with a city or dinance about installation of a neon sign in front of thc Lib erty street building where the chamber has its headquarters. The sign, an attractive de sign, was to be installed under the marquee in front of the Bishop store, with an arrow pointing upstairs to thc cham ber quarters. It has been fully approved by the chamber di rectors. Then it was discovered that installation under the mar quee would be in violation of a city ordinance relative to height of signs from sidewalk. How else to install the sign is the problem.
