Chapter 7 Five o'clock came speedily and Rwsh silently dressed and as silently opened the door to the bedroom, opened Hope's purse and took out a hotel key bearing the number 1001 and the tag of the Royal Hotel. Fifteen minutes later he walked through the lobby and took the elevator to the tenth floor. He placed his ear briefly against the door of 1001, then inserted the key in the lock, turning it with quiet care. With an entire lack of waste motion Rush gave the apartment a thorough going over. What few clothes hung in a closet or rested in the drawers bore no labels. It was a complete lack of iden tification that was a sort of iden tification in itself. He stood in the middle of the room with his back to the door thinking. "There must be something I can do for you." The voice caught Rush in mid-thought and he started to turn. The voice stopped him. "No, don't turn yet. First, raise your hands just above your head, palms out, then turn slowly." Rush turned slowly and found a chubby, smiling man of about 50 framed In the doorway, a businesslike flat automatic held loosely in his fat fingers. "Tell me about you," he said. "Put up the gun and we'll talk," Rush said. "No," the fat man said. Rush recognized the tone. "Okay," he said, "I'm a private detective. I've been hired to pro tect a girl. This is her room and I'm giving it the once over. I like to know where I stand." "Quite right. What are you protecting this girl from?" "What am I supposed to be doing that she needs proleclion?" "Trying to marry her." "So." The man seemed to meditate. "Maybe we'd better talk." He put the gun in a side pocket and nodded at Rush to follow him. "Come into my apartment. It's just next door." "I might as well introduce myself," he said. "I am George O'Hara. Hope, as she told you, is my adopted daughter. There, however, the truth of her story ends." "Yes?" Rush said. "By the way, where is Hope? ' "She's at my apartment. You can phone her there." Rush gave him the number and leaned back as O'Hara called it. "Hello, my dear. I am just making the acquaintance of a friend of yours. Yes, yes, Hope. Just what arrangements have you made with Mr. Henry?" He listened again, then spoke brief commatid to return to the hotel, and hung up. "You will give me the thouS' and dollars my daughter gave you yesterday, Mr. Henry." "No," Rush said. "I think you will, Mr. Henry. My daughter stole if first from me." "No," Rush said. "I'm afraid I'll have to search you. Mr. Henry." "Sit down, O'Hara," Rush said,, and the note of command in his voice hailed O'Hara at the corner of the desk. "I'm tired of being bluffed. You've got no getting away with it than the man in the moon. And besides, I have a faint suspicion that you want as little to do with the police as you possibly can. What, Mr. O'Hara, is your racket?" With an effort O'Hara relaxed and a smile wreathed his chub by features. "You do know -your way about, Mr. Henry. Perhaps I can use you. Keep the thous and dollars and listen to a story. 'You have been misled from the very first, Mr. Henry. My name is not O'Hara, nor is Hope my daughter. My name is Jago, Bernard Jago. Hope's name is O'Hara, however. Now. Mr. Henry, this affair is some thing more than a tawdry, evil stepfather drama. Big things are concerned and I think you can help us out quite a little." "How?" Rush asked. "Several months ago a man approached me in San Francis co. He told me that he had com pleted plans for a new repeat ing rifle operated with com pressed air. For a 50 percent in terest in the gun I advanced him two thousand dollars. He was to deliver the plans to me and I was to market them., "Two months went by and I heard nothing. Finally, I made a trip to his laboratory and found the place empty. My bird had flown with a friend of his. You can imagine my feelings." A very nice story," said Rush. "But where do I fit in?" "I'm coming to that. We traced the inventor to Chicago. We've lost him somewhere in your city, but we did find a trace of the friend yesterday morning. Then we lost him again, perm anently this time, I'm afraid." "You'll have to explain that," Rush said. "Quite simple, and by the way, this is where you come in. The friend was found stabbed to death in the alley by your office building late yesterday afternoon." "I still don't see," Rush said. "Where. you come in? Elemen tary, Mr. Henry. We know that young Germaine called at your office yesterday afternoon short ly before he was killed. It seemed likely that he mentioned his business to you." "No," Rush said, "No, as a matter of fact, he didn't. He merely asked me for protection. I turned him down. It seems I made a mistake." Jago digested that. "Is there anything you might tell me that could help me in my search?" Rush thought a moment. "Only one thing occurs to me. Just after the murder I was fol lowed from the alley by a very unusual man." "Describe him, please." Ja go's voice trembled down deep. "He was tall and dark, very thin, he wore dark clothes and a dark string tie. His voice seemed to come from his boot tops." Jago swallowed and Rush would have sworn that the look that came over his face was fear. "That, Mr. Henry, was Olho Brin, the inventor I spoke of."
