Doerfler Heads flural Division Frank A. Doerfler, head of theF. A. Doerfler and Sons Nur series', is to be chairman of the rural division of the Salem Unit ed War Chest, Carl W. Hogg, campaign chairman, announced today. "Acceptance by Mr. Doerfler of the chairmanship is a defin ite contribution to the success of the rural division's part in the chest drive," Mr. Hogg asserted. "We measure this in terms of the success of his leadership in previous war chest campaigns, Red Cross and war loan drives." "Mr. Doerfler and his co chairmen representing com munities outside the city of Sa lem have regularly demon strated through their reports that residents of the rural sec tions do their share." EHing Halvorson and Charles Strlck faden are associate chairman In this Treasurer fo Pay on Bonds State Treasurer Leslie M. Scott will deposit with the state's fiscal agency in New York $1, 767,560.40 with which to pay principal and interest on state highway, veterans' aid and dis trict interest bonds, it was an nounced today. The deposit will be made October 1. Payments will be as follows: state highway bonds $664,000 principal, $105,076.99 interest; veterans' aid bonds $700,000 principal, $255,056.99 interest; district interest bonds $42,750 principal, $677.16 interest. During October the state trea surer will pay at his office $29, 000 in principal and $12,027.50 in interest on bonds issued by the state board of higher educa tion. The principal payments will reduce to $5,053,000 outstanding highway bonds; the veterans' aid bonds to $11,275,000, district Interest bonds to $1,189,590, and to $1,257,000 the outstanding bonds of the state board of high er education. On October 1, the total state general obligation bonded debt will stand at $17,517,590. The net general bonded debt of the Nfcite on October 1, after deduc n of assets and investments applying against the indebted ness, will be approximately Young Mother May Get School Excuse Attorney General George Neuner has advised the state department of education that the 17-year-old mother of a small child may be excused from completing high school. This authority will be given a school board when the girl has completed the eighth grade if the board believes further at tendance would cause hardship in the family, said a statute quoted by Neuner. A statute amended by the last legislature states that "All children between the ages of 16 and 18 must be in school or le gally employed. If employed, they must attend part time schools , . ." Colonel Miles to Lecture in Salem Colonel F. J. Miles, DSO, OBE, VD, FPhS, formerly of London, England, will deliver one of the principal lectures at the Congress for United Evan gelism which will convene in Salem starting Sunday, Oct. 7. The chaotic moral and social problems swept into every part of the country as a result of war emergency conditions are a challenge to all community and religious leadership. The World Christian Fundamental association is sponsoring the Congress for United Evangelism in an effort to meet a most serious situation. During the five days that have been pro gramed, there will be three lec tures daily, 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7:45 p.m. for each of which some outstanding speaker has been scheduled. Some eleven of these very busy leaders from various denominations have ac cepted assignments. Lutheran Church Hauls Children Announcement has been made by R. A. Krueger, pastor of the New Community Lutheran church, temporarily located at Hood and Summer, that ar rangements have been made to pick up children in the northern part of the city and bring them to Sunday school. She is a graduate of the University of Oregon where she took her major in music and came here recently to accept a position on the teaching staff of Leslie junior high.
