Charles G. Long. His son, Frank, appeared at the door at 7:34. "The world hasn't end- f ed," he said to reporters and photographers. He invited them to stay until 5:33 p.m., then went back into the house. Stocks Advance Irregularly New York, Sept. 21 I ft A few rails, mines, aviations, util ities and scattered industrials maintained rising inclinations in today's stock market although many leaders were crppled by light selling. Transfers were in the vicinity of 1,400,000 shares. The inflation angle and the urge to invest idle funds per sisted as bullish factors. Ac counts were trimmed in num erous instances because of the cloudier labor outlook high lighted by spreading walkouts in oil refining areas. Sales of a stock exchange seat for $72, 000, up $4000, was helpful. Popular most of the time were American Smelting, Cerro De Pasco, Eastern Air Lines, U. S. Smelting, Engineers Public Ser vice, Eastman Kodak, Allied Chemical and Santa Fe. Lag gards included U.S. Steel, Beth lehem, Chrysler, General Mot ors, Texas Co., Standard Oil (N.J.), Sears Roebuck, Du Pont, General Electric, Southern Pa cific, Kennecott, International Harvester and Johns-Manville. Railway bonds exhibited se lective strength. Preliminary Dow-Jones clos ing averages: Industrials 169.69, off 0.53; rails 58.16, off 0.10; utility 34.18, up 0.07; 65 stocks 66.74, off 0.14. Sales of the big board totaled 1,340,000 shares against 1,500,000 yesterday. Curb volume of 450,000 shares compared with 440,000 Thurs day. Bond sales were $6,810,000 against $6,260,000 yesterday. Fall Wheat at Season Peaks Chicago, Sept. 21 U.R)Inler est centered in evening-up op erations on the last day of trade in September contracts on the board of trade today with price changes rapid and September and December wheat and Sep tember rye at new season peaks. New seasonal tops in Winnipeg rye, where prices jumped 4 lk cents at one point, also had some effect on sentiment, September contracts went out widely irregular. Rye finished the day off to up 2a,4 cents a bushel; wheat was up ' to off '; corn unchanged to up Vi; oats off V4 to off 2'A, and barley off SA to up Vi. The trade tended to hold off commitments in'wheat until de liveries in the current contract were known. An open interest of nearly 3,500.000 bushels at the start was regarded as great ly reduced before the close. Some buying in wheal stem med from reports that the gov ernment has secured only about two-thirds of the needed flour for shipment to England. Spot buying, however, by the gov ernment agency has been inac tive lately. Consideration was given also to talk of an upward revision in the flour subsidy rate, com mercial business being at a standstill because mills claim they cannot sell without loss at present prices. . Bureau Announces Limitation on Hops Portland, Sept. 21 WV Brewers purchases of the 1045 hop crop will be limited to 150 percent of the amount used to make malt beverages during the year ended June 30, 1945, minus September 1 inventories, the department of agriculture said today. Domestic requirements will be filled by the 43.000.000 pounds of hops available this year to the American brewing industry, the USDA reported. The USDA announced a sub sidy rate for canned snap beans, 1945 pack, at 11 cents per dozen cans, with adjustments for other container sizes. This Is the same as in 1944. Medford Gets Meters Mcdford. Sept. 21 M"V This city will start to Install park ing meters within two months, under a contract signed with Duncan Meter company, 1111-nois. Earlier Rev. Long had said the earth might not explode into vapor at exactly 7:33 a.m., but might linger on for another nine days. The founder and leader of the Remnant Church of God said the Lord told him that he might keep that cosmic bomb behind the pearly gates and not drop it on the world at all "if the peoples repent of their wrongs." Rev. Long was feeling pret ty vexed too. because he just remembered that in that vision back in 1938 the Lord had neg lected to tell him whether an ancient or modern calendar was to be used in figuring out the beginning of eternity. Long had worked out his date wth doom on a modern latest model calendar and, as he gloomily pointed out. if the Lord meant him to use the old biblical calendar his present cal culations were bound to be way off base. "Everyone knows that they got things pretty mixed up when they switched from the bibli cal to the Julian calendar," said Long. "So how am I going to know where to locate my er rors?" But the Lord has whispered flatly that if people don't quit sinning pretty soon, he'll lose his temper and go ahead and let the ethereal thunder rumble calendar or no calendar.
