term. Serving with him will
be Homer J. Conklin, as chair
man and Menno Dalke. Goldie
C. Hartley will be the clerk.
The budget at Swegle was
adopted as presented with no
dissenting vote.
The estimsted tax levy for
the year will be $3322.50 which
exceeds the 6 percent limitation
by $4738.75 but with the money
to be received by the district
from the income tax reserve
will be about $27D0 as there
were 13486yz days attendance
reported by the teachers for the
last term and this will bring
down the assed levy to over
half the amount. There were
Swegle last year all term but
each day's absence is a loss of
about 20 cents to the district.
There were only three tuition
pupils. The clerk reported on
the 12 regular meetings and one
special held this year, with the
work on the school grounds
and new sidewalk from the
front of the building to the
street the largest improvement
projects. This district has a
substantial bank balance to be
gin the new year and no need
of a reserve fund to be set aside
for expenses until the new tax
money comes in. The delinquent
taxes are very small item in any
East Salem school district.
At Auburn meeting Mrs. Roy

Portland Gl
Captured 200
With the 7th Army, Germany.
June 21 iP How a 19-year-old
Portland soldier captured 200
Germans singlehanded after
starting out to visit his grand
mother in Bavaria, was a leg
end in the 45th division today.
Pfc. William Haug, Jr., Port
land, asked for permission to
visit his relative in a nearby
Bavarian town after the division
had secured Munich. Two miles
from the village he ran into an
enemy road block complete with
machine guns, riflemen, and ba
zookas. Both Haug and the Germans
could hear an American armor
ed division rumbling off to the
right flank. When a German of
ficer questioned the Portlander,
he declared he was an advance
scout for the armored column
and unless he returned soon the
tanks would come and wipe out
the nazis.
The officer decided to release
Haug. But that wasn't enough.
The boy demanded surrender of
all the men, weapons, and
equipment and he got it.
