It was nine-thirty when Susan, hands loaded with letters and checks, knocked on the door to his pri vate office. "Come In," Thorny called. He was gathering papers from the top of his desk and stuffing them Into his brief case. Susan said, "These checks for the men at the factory will you have time to sign them be fore you go to court?" "Sure. And you better run them out before noon. I'll leave my car for you," As he tnlkcd, Thorny was leafing through the checks. He whistled softly to himself. "Those fellows from Detroit the machinery install ers they'll be through this week?" Susan nodded. "I hope so," Thorny said, "for Julie's sake. She can't stand Much more expense." After the checks were signed and Thorny was ready to leave for court Susan said, "Do you remember the name of the night watchman at the old Scar brough factory?" "Lord, no. I don't recall the name. It was so long aRO." Briefly, Susan told the story of the cigarette butts. Thorny listened inlcntly and after she had finished he said, "You know, I always did think there was something fishy about that watchman. Of course, there never was any real evidence against Scarbrough so the case was never really pushed. As I re call, at the time of the fire, it was accepted as an unavoidable accident and the investigation didn't amount to much. It was a few scandal-mongers after the fire that started the tale about Scarbrough. Spite work I al ways figured. But the stories grew like weeds in a swamp un til every crilter in town accep ted them for the truth." Thorny pulled a large gold watch from his pocket and frowned. "By grab!" he said, "Here I am chattering like a jay bird and Judge Tucker waiting in court for ine." He took up his brief case and sail ed out the door. After he had gone Susan sat down at his desk. She noticed the slight tremor in her hands and feit excitement pouring through her like an electric shock. It was like a jig-saw puzzle, this Scarbrough affair. Could it be the pieces were be ginning to fall into a definite pattern? This night watchman must have had a good reason for leaving town so suddenly Could he have been guilty? Or maybe he knew too much and didn't want to talk. He must have a good reason, after all those years, for coming back to Midvale. Maybe Erich could make something tangible out of it. A starling point. Some thing to work on. Susan gathered up the checks, repaired her make-up hurried By Gene Music Music 4 :30 Duplicate Electric Systems are also Unnecessary Paid Adv. by Portland General Electric Co.. When she swung Thorny's car off the highway at the edge of town and started up the freshly made dirt road she felt a little surge of pride go through her. Nest ling there in the dazzling sun light the sprawling buildings of the factory looked like a Christ mas package with their new coat of white paint. She parked the car and went up the newly made steps to a little cubicle marked "Office." Miss White, a middle-aged woman, looked tip and smiled. Susan handed her the checks. "Thorny asked me to bring these out," she said. "He'll be tied up in court all day." "I'm glad you did," Miss White said. "The electrical men will finish tonight." Then she added quickly, "Mr. Erich is in the laboratory if you want to see him before you leave." Susan didn't know how Miss White felt about her and Erich. Right now it didn't seem to matter although she could feel the flush of color on her face as she said, "Yes, I would like to see him just for a moment." Susan knocked and Erich opened the door of his new la boratory. A little breathlessly she told him what Thorny had ACROSS U Hastened S. Conftenled water 8. Military cap 12. Winelike, 13. Put on 33. Con cern etched Erich's face. "Off hand I would say that this fel low might be the key to our problem," he said slowly. "You say Thorny couldn't remember his name? Mother couldn't either, but that's no problem. We can find out." "How?" "Down at the newspaper of fice. All we have to do is look up the week of June 10th, 1923." "Simple," Susan cried. "Why couldn't my lame brain have thought of that? I'll drop in when I get back to town and see if I can get it." Susan's eyes were taking in the neat, new laboratory, with it's white work tables, rows of glistening glass vials filled with vari-colored substances. "What's all that stuff?" she asked. Erich smiled. "Just a few of the things that go to make up a product as mundane as paint." "I don't see how you re member them all!" "You would if you lived with them for four years in college," Erich laughed. Erich took Susan by the arm and led her over to the win dow. Pointing he said, "See those sheets of steel out there in the sun? The ones painted grey?" "Yes." "Those have been out In the weather now day and night for a month. They're samples of the new navy paint. It's what we call a weather test. To date they don't show a sign of de terioration under a micro scope." Susan looked up into Erich's face proudly. "I know It's go ing to be just what the navy needs." ' Erich smiled down at her and kissed her briefly. "Darling," he said, "you'll make the kind of wife a chemical dreamer needs." Susan left then and headed back toward town. She parked Thorny's car in front of the office and walked briskly to ward the newspaper office."
