Silently, he floated, only his head show ing, his nerves tense. The boats came charging down upon him, passed twenty feet away as he held his breath, his heart knock ing so loud it seemed as though they must hear. Silently the boats slid away into the night and were gone. Jason sighed with relief. Boats from some merchant ship, probably. Nevertheless, he did n't want lo be picked up by strangers, who might give him away. Belter swim across to the beach at the lower end of town. The firing from the fort had stopped long since. The tor ches also had been snuffed out. Jason guessed that the guards were sending a searching party around by land to cut him off when he tried to enter the town by way of the beach. He must reach that beach first! Rested now from his slrenu out efforts, he struck out boldly, with strong, even strokes to ward a strip of sandy beach he could see just ahead. It was dark along the beach. In the town, lights blazed and men swarmed in (he streets. Here shadowy trees leaned over the water. Jason felt the sandy bottom under his feet, stood up and began to wade Inward shore. The beach shelv ed rapidly and he came to dry sand. He flung himself down under a protecting bush so as to be hidden from sight. He JU'tt'lar Fellers Turzun W;:0uy TVf JaiLCS FIRED AT tl T IW VAIN . UTT. SONG lay there, panting, resting for the ordeal which was to come. The day of Liloa's wedding had dragged past and night had come at last. Laura Webb moved about her house, pacing from room to room, her mind turning over and over the pos sible ways to help the girl. She had little hope of rescuing Jason from prison, but if she could delay Ihe wedding of the princess for a few days at least something might be done. But how to accomplish this without angering the king and bringing the royal wrath down on Jason. She came to tile doc tor's office and gazed absent mindedly about her. Her eyes lighted on the big medicine chest in the corner. The lock was off and the lid was open. And suddenly she had an idea. She crossed swiftly to the chest and took out three bottles of rum, the same rum which Jason Blake had brought as a gift to the premier. Hurriedly wrapping the three bottles in an old copy of "The Friend." Ihe missionary news paper lo which Ihe doctor sub scribed, she hid the bundle un der her cloak and loft Ihe house. Laura made her way lo the palace, and was told by Ihe chamberlain that the king had retired lo his private quarters lo enjoy a light supper before the ceremonies began. She had Utile difficulty in gaining the presence of the king. His Majesty was seated at a table when Laura entered. His collar was unbottoned and he had laid aside his three-cornered hat. He look ed up, saw Laura, then filled his mouth with fish. He was not pleased to see the wife of the ex-premier. He disliked in terviews with women, anyway. In order lo forestall anything Laura might say, Ihe king spoke first. "No lime now. The wed ding come soon. Come and see me tomorrow." "Your Majesty," Laura smil ed graciously. "I have brought you a gift. It comes from the medicine chest of Doctor Webb." "Eh?" said the king. "What kind of a gift?" Laura extended Ihe package. Unwrapping the package, he picked up one of the brown bottles and held it lo the light of a lamp. "Jamaica rum? Just the thing. I use It to cele brate the wedding. What is a wedding if there is not a little something to wet the throat?" He looked around hurriedly and frowned. "Where's the cham berlain?" Mrs. Webb went hurriedly to the door and beckoned. The chamberlain came at a trot. He produced a corkscrew with a flourish and drew the cork of one of the bottles. The king poured himself a generous drink in a water tumbler. He sniffed the liquor with delight. "Smell good." He tilted the glass and drank off the rum in one long gurgl ing swig. When he put it down he smacked his lips with plea sure and wiped his mouth with the back of li is hand. "Good!" he exclaimed appreciatively. "Excellent! Been long time since I drink , rum like this. Sit down." he invited as he looked at her. "So Doctor Web send me present, eh? He change now that he no longer premier. I'll drink what I like now. He no my personal physi cian any longer." Eku, who had been hovering anxiously in the background, now approached the king. "Your Majesty," he spoke timid ly, "it is time to dress. You had better go to the robe room for your cloak and helmet." "Of course, of course," grum bled the king irritably. "No hurry. I just have another sample of rum before I go. Don't bother me now! Can't you see I'm busy?"
