1 (SWHW .aa)iaiMHSM "Vw rWKWW(n? r v, - "Here Is Your Target" is probably what Commodore Leslie E. Gehres, commander of fleet Air Wing Four, right, has said to Lt. Comdr. W. R. Stevens of Salem, left, as they examine a map of Japanese bases in the Kuriles. Planes of the Wing, many of them from Lt. Comdr. Stevens' Ventura squadron, have made many successful raids in the first consistent bombing attacks on Japan. In so doing they have continued the Wing's "direct ac tion" against the Japanese, for Wing planes under Commodore 4 Gehres' direction have been active against the Japs since they first appeared in the Aleutians. Lt. Comdr. Stevens of Salem, Bomber of Kuriles Lt. Comdr. W. R. Stevens, 30, of Wahpeton, North Dakota, has returned to the United States from an Aleutian naval base where he has been a member of the fleet Air Wing Four task unit which has carried on the first consist- cnt bombing of the homeland iff Japan. As a pilot, Lt. Cmdr. Stevens has taken part in eight missions against the two north Kurile islands of Paramushiro and Shimushu, in addition to carrying out a large number of routine patrol flights. He has now been returned to the Unit ed States for a short leave be- Lyle McCloud Killed in Italy Lebanon, July 21 Mr. and Mrs. I. G. McCloud of Lacomb Tuesday night received a tele gram from the war department notifying them of the death of their son, Lyle. They received word last week that he had been wounded in action In Italy June 22, and the later telegram ated that death occured the nme day. v Lyle entered the army Aug ust 4 of last year, two days aft er his 19th- birthday. He was home on furlough from January 4 to 11, 1944, went overseas in February, and took part in the Anzio beachhead operations. He was later hospitalized for ma laria, and had only been back with his company in the armor ed infantry four days when he received the wounds which caused his death. A member of the 1943 grad uating class of Lebanon high school, Lyle had lived all his life in Lacomb until joining the service. He Is survived by his parents, a sister, Mrs. Ernest Heath, and a brother, Waldon McCloud, all of Lacomb. 'An other brother, Lawrence Mc Cloud, has been with the arm ed forces in England for two years, and is now with a medi unit there. Lebanon Granted Funds for School Lebanon Approval has been made by the Berkeley Federal Works administration office of the Lebanon school board's ap- plication for supplementary funds with which to build the new grade school. Supt. James King received this information by telegram from the Portland FWA office. The board is now awaiting final action from Washington. The original FWA grant ap proved by Washington, amount ing to 60 percent of $46,000, was found insufficient to meet the lowest bid submitted by con tractors. Exact amount of the supple mentary fund will depend upon yhich style of construction is finally decided upon by the FWA if additional funds are granted. His wife, formerly of Long Beach, Cali fornia, is now making her home in Salem with their two small children, William Randolph, Jr., age 4 years, and Carole Ann, age 9 months. Lt. Cmdr. Stevens served as commanding officer of a Ventura bombing squadron. The fleet air wing four group has made well over one hun dred flights over the Kuriles and has obtained many photo graphs of fields and bases on such defenses as AA batteries. The difficulties of the flight have caused Commodore Leslie E. Gehres, commander of fleet air wing four, to describe it as "one of the toughest over-water two-engine bomber runs in the world." . ; ....... And the cold water of the North Pacific is a rugged en emy in itself. Men in a rubber raft, a tiny bobbing dot in a spray whipped area as large as the middle west, will die of ex posure within a day or two, pos sibly In a matter of only hours. And If a man goes into the water itself, with its winter temperature of 35 degrees, he may live only 30 minutes, or he may live as long as an hour. During the flight itself there is always the battle with the weather. Junior High Summer Conference Opened Lebanon The Presbyterian junior high summer conference will be held at Silver Creek beginning Sunday, July 23, and ending July 30.
