Soldiers in Drive of Death Portland, July 13 U.R Two soldiers were dead today after the stolen automobile they were driving plunged into a ditch and was smashed against a tree at an estimated 80 miles an hour. The accident, which occurred Tuesday night, was witnessed by Deputy Sheriffs Bob Rams by and Ralph Davis. They re ported that the car weaved ac ross the highway and then plunged out of control. The two men were identified as Pvt. John F. McElvy of Moul ton, Ala., and Pvt. Lloyd G. Per ry of Bradyville, Tenn. They had approached James L. Huntley, owner of the car, earlier in the evening, asking to use it as a place to drink. He had refused the request but when he returned to get his car later it was gone. He reported the theft to police. McElvy was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lunch A. McElvy, at Moul ton, Ala., and Perry a son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Perry, Rt. 1, Bradyville, Tenn. Malcolm Moffift On Ill-Fated Sub Tillamook, July 13 P A former Salem youth, Chester Malcolm Moffitt, was killed in the sinking of the submarine S-28. his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Moffitt, said today they were notified by the navy de partment. The 22-year-old sig nalman was a graduate of Sa lem high school. Sidewalks for Coast Points Portland, July 13 MR) Side walks for Taft, Nelscott and Ocean Lake were a step nearer construction today when the state highway commission in structed Highway Engineer R. H. Baldock to survey the situa tion. Meeting in its regular session here, the commission received petitions from citizens in these towns asking the commission to establish standard grades and curb lines through the three north Lincoln county towns with the understanding that the pro perty owners would construct standard concrete sidewalks. The commission decided that if the property owners are found to be solidly backing the sidewalk construction, the im provements will be made. Momentarily entering the junk business, the commission sold a collection of obsolete equipment and machinery ac cessories for $3459. Baldock and Chief Counsel J. M. Devers were instructed to look into a Weyerhaeuser Lum ber company request that the point of a state park at North Bend, commission property, be sold to them to complete the company's development - program. He was awarded the purple heart for wounds gusteieed in October, 1918, which required nine months' hospitalization. Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon, Thursday, July 13, 1944 S Johnson Brothers Leave for Service Silverton Sheldon and Earl Johnson, sons of the Conrad Johnsons, were honored at a Sunday evening meeting of the Immanuel Lutheran league at the oountry home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Overlund, in the group presenting service prayer books. The two young men left for induction into the armed forces Tuesday. The evening at the Overlunds was spent in outdoor games and an indoor song service. A devo tional program was given. Mrs. Conrad Johnson was able to attend religious services for the first time since June, 1943 when she fell at the family horn and fractured a hip.
