Germans Shoot Gen Weygand London, June 12 iif French officers Imprisoned at Koenigs berg were told by the Germans tluft Gen. Maxine Weygand, ioVmer commander-in-chief of the French army, was "shot" while attempting to escape," a Reuters dispatch from Zurich reported today. Weygand was made com mander of allied armies just be fore the fall of France, succeed ing Gen, Maurice Roa E, Game lin after the disastrous German breakthrough in May, 1940. Weygand, 77, disappeared soon after the Germans overran all of France after the allied landings in North Africa in. No vember, 1942. (79c Qt.) . , ontgomery Presidency of Senate Sought Senator Howard Belton of Canby has announced his can didacy for the post of presi dent of the senate for the next Oregon legislative session, while Sen. William E. Walsh of Marsh field said over the week-end that he would also be a candi date if he were reelected in No vember. Senators Rex Ellis, Pendle ton, and Coe E. McKenna, Port land, have also announced their candidacies. Yesterday it was announced that democrats would contest the recent ruling of the attorney general, who said that Douglas McKay and Allan G. Carson, elected in 1942 and now serving in the armed forces, would hold their offices, which are now filled by Fred Lamport and John H. Carson, serving pro tern by appointment. Lew Wallace of Portland said it would be a test case, attempting to have the seats declared vacant and open for the November election. Procedure in the case was not announced, but it was presum ed it would take the form of mandamus action to force the secretary of slate to accept nom ination filing by the county democratic committee. Albany Welcomes Infantry Invaders Albany Though their ranks were somewhat depleted by re quirements of the state war fi nance committee for Portland's victory center activities, men and equipment from the 275th infantry "invaded", Albany Monday to launch the Fifth war loan drive here and throughout Linn county. Mrs. R. A. Talbott, chairman of the women's division of the county war finance committee. announced .that women will play an active part in the sale of war bonds in the Fifth war loan drive, as they have in the four preceding drives. Linn county's quota is $2,000,000. Mrs. Talbott announced that Mrs. A. R. Young will head the Albany woman's division, Mrs. Ivan Hoy will act as chairman for the woman's division ,in Sweet Home. Flag salute led by Jeanette Gilmore after the song service. Connie Hcnningsen reported about the fifth war bond drive which opens this week. The Sidney-Talbot war bond rally is to be Friday evening, June 16. A program will be giv en, each family is to bring cook ies and free ice cream will be served. Lew Wallace, dem ocratic national committeeman, said today he was misquoted in newspaper reports that he would bring suit to oust Slate Sens. John Carson and Frederick S. Lamport, both of Salem. Wallace said he has no inten tion of bringing such a suit. Tin two senators were appointed by the Marion county court to suc ceed Sens. Allan G. Carson and Douglas McKay, both of whom entered the army. Wallace, seeking to have the offices declared vacant, asked the attorney general's office for an opinion.
