haven't answered me. You
wanted to prove to Mirtilo that
you were protected by the gov
ernment. Incidentally, you
wanted to deflect both of us
from your father's track. You
wanted to turn the govern
ment's and the gestapo's hunt
after your father into a hunt
of each other."

I glanced at her. Her face was
three-quarters turned towards
mine. "Gestapo," I repeated.
"It's an ugly word."
"You're joking."
"Didn't you admit you were
worried at the thought of my

chilly smile. .
"Your father interests me
very much," I said. "His spe
cialty interests me. Exploration
for new ore bodies has almost
stopped and yet he has contin
ued to discover new ore bodies.
His reputation is almost legend
ary." We were walking up the Ave
nida Juarez, past the fashion
able stores. "In former years,
your father would discover new
ore bodies and sometimes he
would forget to report them to
his employers. Later on, he
would sell these locations to
speculators of the Mirtilo type.
It was a semi-illicit business
your father was engaged in. But
we're at war now and his tin
location presents a bigger is
sue." "May I ask the point of this

wondered how effective I was in

"You feel Chevaile can aid
you? But why this particular
man in this particular city?

said.
