Refreshments were served by Maude Scott, E. Aline Beers, Lillian Bitney and Minnie Bis sell. A three-tiered birthday cake centered the table arranged for the honored guests. Silverton' Mrs. Ferguson Returning To California; Mrs. Lyons Will Complete Term Mrs. Raymond D. Ferguson plans to leave this week for her home in Los Angeles following a visit with her sister, Mrs. How ard D. Long, since November. Her husband, Capt. Ferguson, is serving with the armed forces in Africa. ' Miss Peggy Goplerud will accompany Mrs. Ferguson to southern California for a few days' slay. A pie social will be held in con junction, the proceeds to be used to improve the local observation post. Three men, two of them of ficers, members of the 4th fight er command army air corps of Portland, will give moving pic tures and all three will speak. One patriotic song will be sung by local girls. J. S. Coomler, the president, is in charge of ar rangements, Silverton PTA Plans Meeting Silverton The outstanding educational meeting of the year of the Silverton Parent-Teacher association, will be Thursday afternoon at 2:45 o'clock, at the Eugene Field auditorium when Miss Frances Clinton, Marion county home demonstration agent, will talk on the health of children and the food neces sary for their well being. The fifth grade mothers, Mrs, Russell Myers and Mrs. Dewey Service, will be hostesses for the social hour arranging the lea which will be a feature of the latter part of the program. Supplemental numbers will be a feature health song by rooms 8 and 9 of the first grade; playlets, "Trip to Health Land," and "Good Health," by rooms 7 and 11 of the second grades. Miss Hannah Olson, PTA president, is urging a large at tendance Thursday afternoon. Appeal is Approved By Liquor Commission . Dallas The Blue Garden con fectionery, refused a beer license renewal at the last meeting of the city council, upon appeal has received from the slate liquor commission a BO-day probation ary permit to sell beer. Following failure to secure ap proval for license renewal from council members present at the last meeting, W, H. Sanders, Blue Garden operalor, contacted five councilmen who agreed to sign a petition to the liquor com mission granting the probation ary renewal. The liquor com mission approved the appeal. Population Gain Shown af Albany Albany Mortality rales last year In the Albany area show a gain in population, it was stat ed by Dr. A. E. Bostrom, county health officer. The records show that births were more than twice as numerous as deaths, accord ing lo certificate filings by local physicians. Total of births re corded was 273 while 135 per sons died during the 12 months. These figures apply only to the territory Included in what Is known as the Albany district, Including the town and immcd ialely surrounding area. Younger Polk Men Register For Induction Dallas Fifty- three Polk county 18-year-olds registered between December 11 and De cember 31, 1942,. for selective service in the sixth registration at the armory headquarters. Young men are reminded by the local board to register at the se lective service board office on their 18th birthdays, or on the day following should their birth date .fall on Sunday or a holiday. Farmers Union Plans Meet Dayton The January month ly meeting of the Dayton local of the Farmers' union made plans for the stale convention, to be hold in Polk county some time the latter half of February, the exact date not yet set. Joe Ow ens, president, will be the dele gate and Fred Withee, Jr., the alternate. Ed Reetz was elected local buyer for the warehouse depart ment of the union. Mrs. Joe Owens and Miss Esther Nichols served refreshments. - Linn Filing Fees Exceeding Budget Albany Filing fees coming into the Linn county recorder's office during 1942 totaled $7119. 20, and exceeded the 1942-43 budget estimates by $954.20, it was pointed out Tuesday by Stella Hoover, county recorder. Angel Business Men's club meeting at the Mt. Angel hotel Tuesday noon. O. L. Withers was elected president, Leonard Fisher was unanimously voted vice-president and John T. Bau man, secretary-treasurer. Sylvester Schmitt gave a re port on the furnishing of a day room at Camp Adair and stated that there was still- $40.24 to receive.. E. B..; Slolle made a motion that the club furnish this amount. Rev. Alcuin , Heibel, O.S.B., spoke on the club's membership and stated that he would like very much to see that, .member ship tickets be sold and all buy ing same take a personal inter est in the club.: Miss Adeline Usselman and Pete Usselman furnished the entertainment for the club members. Dr. E. J. Corcoran extended his farewell to the members of the club and stated ' that he would have his offices in the Morgan building in Portland. , All club members gave the outgoing president, W.
