Chinese Cancel Early
Gains of Japanese
(Thli dilljr lolutr. conducted bj Dewttt MicKfnilr. Wide World wir niljit It
written in his absence today, by alen Babb.)
The five-year-old war in China recently has undergone a
startling change. Three months ago the Japanese opened a cam
paign that some feared might knock China out of the war. Six
weeks ago most of east - central
China seemed to be falling into
their hands. But today a large
part of their gains has been can
celled. On other China fronts they
have been stalemated for weeks.
Their proudly-announced plan
to establish an all-rail connec
tion between Shanghai and Sing
apore definitely is on the shelf.
New Phase Looms
It still is too early to say
whether this is the result pri
marily of relnvigorated Chinese
striking power or of change of
the Japanese army's plans. In
either case, however, evidence
points lo the early opening of
a new phase of the Pacific war,
taking the form either of a bold
new Japanese stroke or of the
passing of the initiative in Chi
na from Japanese hands.
Our information thus far
comes entirely from the Chinese
The Japanese are silent about
what is happening in Kiangsi
and Chekiang provinces, where
the most marked change has
come about, as is their wont
when things are not going well
for them or they are plotting
something, new. Briefly, the
Chinese picture of the situation
is this:
Picture in China
In mid-May the Japanese,
using perhaps 200,000 men, be
gan coordinated attacks south
westward from Hangchow, in
Chekiang province, and south
eastward from Nanchang, in Ki
angsi, driving from cither end
of the Chckian-Kiangsi railway.
The avowed objectives were to
seize all the railway and take
half a dozen cities which the
Japanese believed to be sites of
airbases from which their home
islands could be bombed. By
the end of June these things had
been accomplished.
But now much of the Japan
ese success has been undone,
The famous rubber-band defense
of the Chinese armies has oper

ated with a remarkable snap,

railway again is in Chinese
hands and today's reports indi
cate that some 75 miles has been

Moving to Siberia
Even while their communi
ques record the resurgence of
their forces, Chungking military
authorities have their fingers
crossed. They keep in view the
possibility that the Japanese are
fighting merely rearguard ac
tions while taking out the best
of their assault troops for use
elsewhere, perhaps Siberia, per
havs far southern China. There
have been interesting shifts .of
Japanese forces recently tln
French Indo-China and the Chi
nese are preparing to meet a
possible assault on their south
ern border, perhaps on Kwangsi
province. The Japanese have
had little luck in their southern
campaigns against China this
year and may be looking forta
new field of operations.
