Chinese Cancel Early Gains of Japanese (Thli dilljr lolutr. conducted bj Dewttt MicKfnilr. Wide World wir niljit It written in his absence today, by alen Babb.) The five-year-old war in China recently has undergone a startling change. Three months ago the Japanese opened a cam paign that some feared might knock China out of the war. Six weeks ago most of east - central China seemed to be falling into their hands. But today a large part of their gains has been can celled. On other China fronts they have been stalemated for weeks. Their proudly-announced plan to establish an all-rail connec tion between Shanghai and Sing apore definitely is on the shelf. New Phase Looms It still is too early to say whether this is the result pri marily of relnvigorated Chinese striking power or of change of the Japanese army's plans. The avowed objectives were to seize all the railway and take half a dozen cities which the Japanese believed to be sites of airbases from which their home islands could be bombed. By the end of June these things had been accomplished. But now much of the Japan ese success has been undone, The famous rubber-band defense of the Chinese armies has oper WANTED HOP PICKERS Now registering for late hops picking starts August 31st; good crop and good camp grounds; store on grounds; 4 miles west of Salem.
