By order of W.M. ltfU" United War Chest Drive Seeks $65,000 The budget for the Salem United War Chest drive this fall to replace the regular community chest drive but to include local and war agencies under one drive has been approved at $65,000 by the board of directors. This covers the prospective contrib uations to IB agencies instead of the regular nine under the com munity chest, and will cover six Salem agencies instead of nine as last year, three outside agen cies but situated in the slate, and nine war agencies. Last year the budget for nine Salem agen cies was fixed at $50,000 and $47,100 was pledged. This year there are but six Salem agencies listed as the Girls' Reserve, which was listed as a separate agency last year, is taken into the budget under the allocation for the YWCA and while it still will receive support from the chest it will be through funds appropriated for the YWCA. Contributions for the Hotel Minto will be elimi nated entirely, it being consid ered by the budget committee as largely having outlived its usefulness under present condi tions and in its place is included a service man's fund for assist ance to men in the armed serv ices rather than to the ordi nary transient who was aided from the fund for Hotel Minto. Earlier in the year the Hed Cross withdrew from the com munity chest at its own request. Under Ihe new setup aimed to eliminate practically all of the independent drives for funds for war purposes or otherwise and consolidate them all under one head, the budget is cut up for support of the following agencies and purposes, with the amount for each: Boy Scouts, $4,500; Camp I'ire Girls, $1,200; Catholic Charilies, $2,000; Service Men's fund, re placing Hotel Minto, $1,000; ACROSS 1. The budget committee Includ ed the war and service agen cies named after a careful in vestigation and those included are all considered fully ac credited agencies which would conduct independent solicita tions unless Incorporated in the chest. The out of town agen cies such as Boys' and Girls' Aid society, Louise Home and similar agencies, have annually carried on a drive here inde pendent of the community chest and it was decided to take them all under the single campaign. An agreement is being drawn up with these various agencies to the effect that if their head quarters receive independent contributions sent in from Sa lem, but not through the com munity chest, such contributions will be considered as a part of their share of the war chest bud get.
