Jfantrij, f- alter Tire Rationing Order Amended Washington, Jan. 21 A two point amendment to the government's or der restricting sules of new tires was announced today by Ploris Nagel voort, tire rationing administrator, on receipt of information from Washington, D. C. The amendment modifies the pro hibition on sales of 6- and 8-pIy in all popular passenger car and light truck sizes and Imposes full ration ing restrictions on truck tires for vehicles 10 years old or more. Nagelvoort emphasized that to day's amendment does not mean that there has been any change in Uie tire situation but simply repre sents a minor adjustment made aft er investigations. "Not a single tire has been added to our supplies," the administrator stated; "strict rationing is still the order of the day so that our abso lutely essential public health and safety services can continue to op erate." "Eligible" users of light truck size tires according to the new amend ment now can buy any ply of tire 4, 6 or 8 if they can obtain the re quired certificate from their ration ing board. Formerly only 4-ply tires could be purchased by light truck operators. To obtain 6 or 8-ply passenger car type tires under the amendment the "eligible user" must prove to the satisfaction of his ra tioning board that a 4-ply tire will not serve his needs. Previously no 6 or 8-ply passenger car tires could be sold to anyone. By subjecting tires of sizes used by trucks 10 years old or more to the full restrictions of the rationing program the amendment limits their sale to "eligible" users only. No change is made in the "obso lete" sizes of passenger car type tU'cs for vehicles 10 years old or more. (Continued rrom Pago 3) Buch, color bearers; Mary Entress, musician. In fact, I very rarely re ceive them; but one that sounds much more like the work of a jester than a "Jilted maiden" asks a question that tempts me to answer. I might add that Judging from the writing, the letter looks genuine. It says: "I was engaged to a man in his late thirties who seemed devoted to me. After he had given me a beautiful engagement ring and also a dia mond watch and had taken part in the party given to announce our engagement, and after the date had been set for the wedding and my trousseau had been bought, he suddenly informed me by mail that his family had objections to me that he could not marry against their wishes. That was the final curtain! "I have been quite HI since then, and have not yet sent back his presents. Today a friend came pur posely to tell me that I was the third victim to be given the same ring, the same diamond wrist watch I I'd like to end this chain engage ment idea of his and not return either of these gifts to him. It might make it less convenient for him to gather in a new victim! Do you think the idea has any justifi cation, or do you still Insist that the girl send back his ring?" As already said, the situation docs not sound real though it may be. So my answer is perhaps not quite real cither, but anyway I am tempt ed to suggest that you sell the jewels and divide the "spoils" with the two other ex-fiancees and buy Defense Bonds with the proceeds. How to End 'Phone Conversation Dear Mrs. Post: When someone telephones and begins a conversa tion which from experience I know will go on and on, how can I end the conversation somewhere before too long, without appearing rude? Answer: Explain truthfully any one of the reasons why you can't talk any longer. For example: "I have to go the baby Is crying"; or "Mrs. Neighbor has Just come in"; or "My front door bell is ringing I've got to answer it!" or "I'm due at Red Cross in fifteen minutes," etc. Writing on Engraved Invitations Dear Mrs. Post: Is it improper to write persona messages across formal-engraved invitations? In a few instances I would like to urge someone to come or let her know that a long lost friend will be present. Answer: I think it would be much better to enclose a card, or merely Major Victory Won By Reds at Rv DeWHt (WW. Withdrawal of a big army under enemy pressure is always a desper ate undertaking. It is doubly so when it has to be engineered through deep snows and in sub zero weather, particularly for troops which are unequipped for such wea ther and now have been deprived of their shelter of winter quarters and must shift for themselves in the death-dealing winds of the steepes. Face Disaster The position is one which certainly holds potential disaster for the na zis. It depends on whether the Rus sians are able to exploit their cap ture of Mozhaisk before the Ger mans are able to retire to fresh positions and reestablish their line. Yesterday I called your attention to the threat In the Japanese cap ture of the airbase of Tavoy in Bri tish Burma. Since then combined Japanese and Siamese (Thai) for ces have struck toward the Burmese port of Moulmein, though the Bri tish report that the drive was checked nenr the Thai land -Burma frontier town of Myawaddi. Now the extension of the Jap anese attack to Burma is most dis quieting. As pointed out in yester day's column, were the Japs able to gain control of Bupma they would at once have cut the Burma road and thereby fairly well isolate China from the outside world, and would have gained a powerful base tar operations against India. To CutOff China Loss of the Burma road obviously would be a catastrophe for the al lies in the far east since It would cut the Chinese off from their main supply route. And today the Chin ese press Is appealing to the United States and Britain for huge quan tites of war materials. But beyond this, there Is srwtll doubt that the Japanese are getting set for a possible attempt to wrpst. the Indian empire from Great Bri tain. That has been one of Nippon's great dreams for long years. It's been one of Germany's for that mat ter. There 1 no reason to suppose that the British aren't holding Bur ma in strength. They also have a large standing army of natives In India. However. If the Japs should succeed in getting hold of Burma It would present a serious menace to India proper. The gravity of this situation would be vastly increased If the Nipponese should also cap ture Singapore, for that would give them a sea route between Singa pore and Sumatra to reach their base In Burma.
