The auxiliary will serve jitney dinner, open to the public, at the Legion rooms in the city hall on Armistice day and will assist the post with the program and parade, The auxiliary voted to send 5 to the Portland Gift Shop and $10 to the check of the month club, this being the yearly contribution. Throughout the fall months the members have assisted in making 72 layettes for the Red Cross, tied sev eral quilts and at present have tod dlers' packs to make. After the meeting the auxiliary joined with the Legion members for refreshments. County Assembly Meets in Woodburn Woodburn The Marlon County Assembly of the American Legion auxiliary convened in the auxiliary rooms in the city holi at Woodburn Friday night. Mrs. P. P. Sayre of Aurora, president, presided at the business session. Mrs. P. M. Powell of Silverton gave an interesting and entertaining account of her trip to the national convention in Milwaukee. Follow ing adjournment of the session the auxiliary Joined the post for refresh ments and dancing. The committee in charge of the evening was Jessie Sims, chairman, Maude B. Hicks, Margaret Whitman, LaVerne Adams. Esther Moon, Leo na Miller and Louise Eleger. Chapter J At Goulet Home Woodburn Mrs. Florence Goulet entertained Chapter J of the P.E.O. Sisterhood Thursday evening at her home in Third street. The meeting was preceded by a dessert supper at 7:30 o'clock with Mrs. Ivan C. Beers assisting the hostess in serving. The rooms were attractively decorated with choice dahlias. The feature of the program hour was the report of Mrs. Beers, presi dent of Chapter J, of the supreme convention which she attended In Victoria, B.C., September 9 to 12. Guests were Mrs. Donald T. Lauer of Chapter DO of Berkeley, Calif., and Mrs. Amelia Auld of Chapter BM of Portland, both of whom spoke. The state organizer, Mrs. Edna Beattie of Mllwaukie, will Inspect the chapter at the next meeting which will be held October 23 at the home of Mrs. F. O. Evenden. Surprise Shower For Couple Silverton A double event, both surprises, culminated In a pleasant social evenlntc Thursday at the sub' ponski island. Civilians in Sitka, three miles away on Baranof isl and, were showered with falling glass and an unestlmated number injured as buildings at both the air base and in the city cracked Irom the concussion. Navy officials said damage caused by the blast was limited to the loss of the dynamite, broken glass and doors blown in by the concussion. The 15 individuals known to have been injured were five navy men, six civil service employes, two employes of the contractor (Stems Drake Pa get Sound company), an army priv ate and the wife of a contractor's employe. The six dead were members of a fire-fighting crew which rushed to battle a grass fire just as the flames reached an underground magazine where the dynamite was stored. Naval officials listed the army victims as Capt. Francis C. Allen, provost marshal and former official of the Standard Oil company of Cal ifornia at San Francisco, whose home is at Kentfield, Calif.; Private Ralph E. Klrkbrldge, Los Gatos, Cal.; Private Frank E. Hayton, San Fran cisco; Private Albert A. Spurling, Everetsville, W. Va., and Hedley C. Eastabrooks, whose rank and home address were not given. The sixth victim was a marine. Private Tho mas A. Baskom, whose father lives at Murfreesboro, Tenn. Among the injured were Private Lester B. Kirk, home ungiven, who suffered a severe case of shock, a Sergeant Crosby and a Mrs. Roche, wife of a contractor's employe, who was badly cut by flying glass and may lose an eye. So far as is known, construction of these pro posed camps, in the event that all studies establish the availability of the sites, Is contingent upon the expansion of the nation's armed forces. Architect - engineers have been working on the 78.000-acre site in the vicinity of Medford since May 5. Completion date for this work has been extended from September 30 to October 20. Plans and speci fications are now 95 percent com plete. Thousands of pages of de scriptive work, contract documents, specifications and prints have been prepared. Office personnel has been considerably reduced from a high of 170 persons, and the small force of draftsmen remaining is engaged on previously submitted plans and necessary corrections. Construction on the basis of pres ent plans can begin immediately, when authorized. Planning on the 70,000-acre site at Marysvllle, originally scheduled for completion on September 30, is 60 percent finished. As in the case of the Medford project, instructions from the quartermaster general have caused the completion date to be set forward to November 17. The West Yellowstone winter- training site, a 118,000-acre tract 113 miles south of Bozeman, has progressed to the 10 percent stage, with 355 persons employed in ex tensive pre-planning. The comple tion date has been advanced from November 8 to December 8. Architect - Engineers John W. Cunningham & Associates and Law rence & Allen of Portland, Ore., after working on plans for a tri angular division camp at Eugene, Ore., transferred their activities 40 miles northwest, to the vicinity of Corvallis, where they have been es tablished since . August 23. Plans and specifications are about com plete. As In the case of the other three projects, completion time has been extended to October 18. Meanwhile, newly- designated Camp Cooke, in the Santa Marla Loinpoc, Calif., area, latest camp to go under construction in the ninth zone, Is making rapid progress. Ground - breaking ceremonies were held on September 14 in cooperation with the Santa Barbara county pub licity bureau. Construction is ex pected to be finished about Janu ary 7, 1942.
