Saturday, June 21, 1941 Six The Canttnl Journof,' Salem.' Oreqon Henry 'By ME DORA FIELD - Frultleai Search For thero was only Bill himself, (trim enough In his sU-ubbIo to ex tricate himscU from tlio wreckage of what had been one of a pair of beautiful Chinese Chippendale gill mirrors. Two chairs and a table, apparently, had been pretty well mixed up In the melee, the tall vase of gladioli had been upsot but had not broken and flowers and glass from the mirror wore scattered In all directions. "Watch out, don't get cut," Bill warned, as I rushed forward to fling myself upon him, crying out to know if he was badly hurt. "Wns It you I ran Into Just now?" Bill demanded of Kirk. "Ran Into?" Kirk echoed blankly. "Yes, here at the foot of the stairs." "I was back In the kitchen," Kirk explained. "I had thought I heard a sound from that direction and had gone to Investigate. Then I heard all this "Well, let's don't stand here then," Bill cried, galvanized Into action In spite of his Injuries. "I ran into somebody. Let's go after him." "All right," Kirk agreed with al acrity. "But .which way do you think he went? I saw no one." "I don't know," Bill admitted dazedly, putting his hand to his head, "I was right at the bottom step. Probably he went through the dining-room door. That's near est the stairs. I'll go that way and you go through the breakfast room. Bally, stay In the library. If anyone comes in, hit 'em as hard as you can with that poker and yell like hen." As they gatherod up light for their scouting expeditions, two calls came from the upstairs hallway. "What's going on down there?" In Bob's voice, which sounded quite or Hated, while Eve inquired acidly whether anybody ever slept In this house. Looking upward, I could see the tiny flumes of their cnndles pricking the darkness overhead. "BUI rnn into someone," I ex plained, shakily. "What's that?" Bob asked. And, "Why didn't he look where he was going?" from Eve. Then I could hear Bob trying to persuade Eve to ro back to her room and lock tho door while he rame down to aid the searching par ty. "All right," she finally agreed, "but you must como In later and tell me all about It." 1 was still In the hall, the lamp which Kirk had handed over to me swaying at an angle of goodness knows how many dcRrecs, when Bob reached the late battlefield. "(Josh," he exclaimed, "what a shambles I How many killed and wounded?" And then without waiting for a re ply, "dive me that lamp and let mo take a look around." "You'd better warn Bill and Kirk." 1 cautioned, "or you may get killed. They told me to stay In the library. Don't let tliein mis take you for the murderer." "Murderer," Bob rrpoatrd, stop ping and staring down at me, as though he hnri Just rrnllzcd the sig nificance of all that, had happened. "Not a pretty word." he agreed. "But we have had a murder, so there's bound to be a murderer." Eventually the three searchers came back to the library fire, great ly disgruntled that they had found no trace of any trespasser. "Oh, Bill, darling," I cried at the sight of the lump already swelling on his forehead. "How terrible.' "Did you know that you left me In the bedroom without n sign of a candle?" Bill inquired In that long-suffering tone which Is so an noying when you already know yourseir In the wrong. "Oh." I confessed contritely, "I never thought of that." "What 1 can't understand In the first place," Bill went on sternly, "is wlint you came downstairs for." "Sally wns worried about Mrs. Ambler." Kirk explained. "We went In to see that she was all right and afterward I forgot to replace the lamp. I'm terribly sorry, old . By I WONT CUT EH, HENRY 7) GUESS MEBBE YOUR fT? , GRASS 15 TOO T0U-Gjj man. That looks like Pretty bad bump on your head, too." "But what happened In the hall?1 I had to know. "I never heard such carrying-on In all my life." "Yes." sold Kirk, "are you sure you actually ran Into someone and not Just a chair?" "Of course, I'm sure," Bill replied indignantly. "Did you see anybody?" asked Bob. "No," said Bill morosely. "That was the trouble. I couldn't see any thing, but I am sure it was a man, for whoever it was gave me a hefty shove to one side. I lost my balance and I think I crashed Into a chair. Anyway, all the furniture on the place seemed to gang up on me. "I threw out my arms, grabbing with both hands, to try to break my fall and my right hand struck that confounded mirror and brought It down on top of me. PraO' tlcally brained me and didn't help my hand either," ho complained, bitterly, taking stock of his in' Juries. "Oh, dear, I'm so sorry," I la mented. "And It was my great' great-grandmother's mirror, too. But what can we do about your head?' "Alcohol," Bob suggested. "An. piled externally, I mean. All right, Internally, too, of course. But soak a cloth and hold It over the bump." And, as I looked doubtful, "I've got some In my room," he offered. "I'll go right up and get It." "I had no notion you would wake up," I told Bill. "Usually you Bleep so soundly." He and Kirk exchanged wry glan ccs. "I wouldn't call this a usual situation," Bill said. "Why on earth should you want to come down to see Aunt Maggie? Of all the fool ishness I'vo ever heard of " "I suppose It was foolish," I ad mitted, glad enough to get off with out more detailed explanation at the moment. "Put me on a pretty spot," said Bill. "Here, I wake up and you are mUtslng. I call but get no an swer. So I have to go through all that rlgamarole of getting a light, And not a candle anywhere. I look In the bathroom. Nobody home. Then I find the hall door unlocked. "Well, I ask, what now? Echo an swers why and I decide to take a look. My matches have given out. and it Is pitch-black In the hall, but I feel my way to the stairs and get down all right. Then Just at the foot of the stairs I am run Into by a baboon or gorilla or hairy ape and" "Here you are, old man." said Bob, bark from his quest for first-aid materials. "Do you mean to say this thing you ran Into had hair on him?" "Hair on this chest, anyway." Bill replied, "Judging from the force of the shove he gave me. I'd Use to get my hands on him." "Then Alice did see something," I remarked, applying a guest towel, sonkrd In alcohol, to the bump on Dill's head. To be continued Radio I Proerams KTM IHftfl KHocrrlrt Monday P.
