I, Needham and the host, Mr. Cooley. Mrs. Douglas McKay presided at a smart luncheon Thursday after noon complimenting members of her contract club. Miss Belt Honors Couple . Highlight of Thursday afternoon In Portland was the marriage of Miss Elizabeth Van Fleet, daughter of the Clark C. Van Fleets, and George Weldler de Schwelnitz. The ceremony was performed at 5 o'clock In the chapel at Trinity Episcopal church, with the Rev. Lansing F. Kempton reading the service in the presence of relatives and a few close friends. After the service a wedding sup per was held at Waverley Country club for members of the two fam ilies. In honor of the bridal couple. Miss Mira Belt of Salem, fiancee of the bridegroom's brother, Alex de Sch welnitz, arranged a dinner party at her home In Salem recently followed by dancing. Miss Van Fleet entertained a few friends at a cocktail party at her home Monday evening In greeting to Miss Mary Jewett of Sacramento, who Is In Portland visiting her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Jewett. Burton Edwards Feted on Birthday Mrs. Norval E. Edwards entertain- ed at a gay party this afternoon honoring her son, Burton, on his second birthday anniversary. L. Hannaman, The wedding date Is set for July 2 at the Leslie Methodist church In Salem. The house and table were decorat ed with roses and lilies. A miniature wedding cake, adorned with red and pink rosebuds and silver leaves, and a small basket containing lilles-of the-valley and love birds were on the table. A late supper was served. Bidden to attend the shower were Miss Betty Ann Lemon, Mrs. Dale Lemon, Miss Loretta Mae Lemon Mrs. O. L. Guests in the capital Thursday were Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Gerber and their young son, Norman De Lappe, of Seattle, who visited with Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Potts and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Gemmell. The Gerbers were en route to their home in the north following a vacation in California. Miss Proudfit Given Scholarship Miss Evelyn Proudfit of Salem has been granted the Freshman Scholarship to Seattle Pacific col- lege for the coming year, which covers her full tuition for the au tumn, winter and spring quarters. The granting of this scholarship Is based upon special achievement in scholarship In high school and personality and character are taken Into consideration. Miss Proudfit Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Proudfit of Route 7, Salem. Auxiliary Members Attend Meeting A group of Salem members of Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary attended the open meeting con ducted by Past Department Com mander John Schum, in Independ ence recently. Attending from Salem were Mrs Russell Mudd, Mrs. James Moor man, Mrs. Frank Devilin, Mrs. Cyril Nadon. Mrs. Ralph Harlan, Mrs. Walter Wickert, Mrs. Robert De Lapp. Mrs. Eugene Cameron and Mrs. Bert Tompkins. Past Presidents Elect Officers The Past Presidents club of the Woman's Relief Corps met at the home of Mrs. Cordelia LeBare Tues day. In Portland Thursday and today for the Rose Festival are Mr. and Mrs. Alden Adolph and Joe Adolph, Mrs. W. A. Gueffroy left Thurs day morning for Seattle, Wash., to be present at the graduating exer elses of her daughter, Carmen Lou lse, Saturday morning, when she gets her degree In music at the Unl versity of Washington. Phom 867 The Bethel alumni picnic was held June 8 with a large crowd at tending. A no-host dinner was serv ed at noon and a program was given in the afternoon. Willamette Shrine No. 3, White Shrine of Jerusiiiem, will hold a regular meeting Monday night in the Masonic temple. Reports from the convention of the Supreme Shrine will be given by Miss Ruth Moore, worthy high priestess of the Salem group. The Salem Central WCTU will meet June 17 at 2 o'clock at the hall, North Commercial and Ferry streets. Zontians Install Officers Members of Salem Zonta club were entertained at a delightful din ner party Thursday night at the Quelle. The table was attractive with summer flowers and glowing tapers. During the regular meeting new officers for the year were installed. They Include Miss Helen Barrett, president; Miss Mabel Savage, first vice president; Mrs. Winifred R. Herrick, second vice president; Miss L. May Rauch, secretary, and Mrs, Margaret Rosecrans, treasurer. Next Thursday night, June 19, Miss Helen Barrett will be hostess to the club at an al fresco dinner at her home at 6:30 o'clock. The fol lowing Thursday, June 26, Miss Helen Booker and Miss L. May Rauch will entertain the group with a lawn party at the YWCA in State street. Committes Named For Benefit Dance Mrs. Ralph Harlan, finance chair man of Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary, announces her refresh ment committee for the benefit dance for which the auxiliary will be host Saturday evening, June 14, at Veterans hall. Proceeds from the dance will go toward furnishing cantonment sup plies for men in the service, The public is invited. Miss Irene Jewett To Marry in South Announcement Is being made of the forthcoming marriage of Miss Irene Jewett and Curt Emery, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Emery of Salem. The ceremony is planned as an event of Friday, July 4, at the home of the bride-elect's uncle and aunt, Mr. and' Mrs. H. L. Staples in San Rafael, Calif. Miss Jewett Is the daughter of Mrs, V. L. Jean of Albany, a for mer Salem resident, and Is a grad uate of Salem high school, later at tending school In San Francisco. Mr. Emery attended Salem schools and is now staff sergeant in the United States army air corps, sta tioned In Salinas, Calif., where the couple will make their home. Dakota Couple Married at Salem At a beautiful, quiet ceremony performed Thursday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Fagg, Ml-s Stanley, N. Dak., became the bride of Mr. and Mrs. John Kvame of Minot, N. Impressive service before the fireplace, ium, roses and sweetpeas. Preceding the ceremony, Mrs. Kvame, mother of the bridegroom, lighted the tall tapers. The bride wore a gown of white brocaded satin, made princess style with long train, a sweetheart neck line and a fitted bodice, trimmed with tiny satin buttons down the back. The long sleeves were gath ered at the shoulders and extended Into a point over the wrists. Her tulle veil fell from a coronet of orange blossoms and she carried a bouquet of American Beauty roses, tied with white satin,. Her only attendant, Mrs. Guy Fagg, wore aqua organza and car ried an old-fashioned nosegay of sweetpeas, roses and delphinium. Mr. Fagg served the bridegroom as best man. For her son's marriage Mrs. Kvame wore a navy sheer redln- gote, made with bracelet-length sleeves, and a corsage of roses and sweetpeas. A wedding breakfast followed In the Rose room of the Hotel Argo The table was centered with a bride's cake and decorated with summer flowers. For traveling the bride chose a redlngote ensemble of navy and white cable net with white acces sories. Her corsage was of garden las. The couple will live In Minot, where Mr. Kvame is with the City Service Oil company. Mrs. Kvame has been connected with the Fed eral Land Bank In Stanley. Woman's Corps At McVey Home Sewing Unit No. 1 of the King- wood Woman's Defense corps met at the home of Mrs. Pearl McVey in Sixth street, West Salem, Wed nesday afternoon, with Mrs. Wil liam Kessel in charge. Flag Day Draws DAR To Champoeg Flag day, which Is annually ob served at Chdmpoeg by Daughters of the American Revolution, will take members there again Satur day, June 14, for a patriotic pro gram. Several Salem matrons are planning to attend the affair. The state society of the Oregon Daughters will sponsor the annual picnic and a basket luncheon Is to be served. A Flag day program will be directed by Miss Ethel May Handy, state chairman, for the cor rect use of the flag, and will be held in the pavilion at 2 o'clock In the afternoon. Inspection will be made of the pioneer mothers memorial cabin, and other points on the grounds. Daughters and their friends are in vited to attend. Kent McVey and Merle Wen Chester are In Portland attending the Rose Festival.'
