Thursday, April 3, 1941 ITie Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon Nine Jlie Unpredictable Iflflrd. Robert (an I d3e d3otliered by, jprotocoi Washington Suppose lt'a a blue chip day for you and you're lunch ing at this town's swankiest lunch spot. About one o'clock you'll see a tall, slim young woman stroll in wearing jodhpurs. And if not a Jodhpur place. You've seen one of the town's cel ebrities: Evie Robert, daughter pf the late Harold (Standard Oil) Walker. And wife of handsome Lawrence "Chip" Robert, the Atlan ta engineer who was treasurer of the democratic party until recently. Evie everyone calls her that a ill, maybe, stop to whisper to aig Uied Jesse Jones. Hell chuckle. She'll say something to tne neaa waiter. He'll chuckle. She'll Join a large party or bring one with her. And all this Is done with a nice, feminine version of the Fred As talre brand of nonchalance. Evie was born to the purple. But, he says, "It Itches." She adds cas ually, "Purple is just another name for people who can't do anything." She's thirty-ish now. Fresh, trl- angular face. Blue eyes and a thick mop of yellow hair she pulls into a smooth knot. Never wears a hat, except as she says, "To weddings In Episcopal churches." She's the town's most unpredic table hostess. Started out that way socially speaking. Made her debut In Pelplng yes, China of all places. She was Interviewed then by a reporter who twitted her, "What Is the idea? I thought girls came Oout where there was some chance of meeting rich men "Yes. I know," drawled Evie In her soft husky voice, "but mother hasn't much hope for me." Jokers In Her Deck She came back to Washington to live and watch and Join the parade of celebrities. Somehow she keeps the Allce-in-Wonderland attitude toward life. People are fun. So peo ple find her fun. She likes twitting. Give or take. Like the very swank party she and her husband gave recently tor dem ocrats. Evie showed up for once In a dress. Looked quite demure to the reception line. One guest Del' lowed, "Why Evie, Where's the rid. tag pants? I thought you'd at least bring a horse." Right there Evie dropped her de. mure-ness. She retorted, "1 didn't have to. Figured there'd be a lot of honecollars here ahead of me.' This twitting business doesn't snare her husband, who takes It with an appreciative grin. But three state governors have "pardoned" 3 her for the "crime of husband em barrassment." She has the pardons gold seals and all, framed on her sturdy walls. You haven't been the rounds here i Evie Robert until you've been to one of her par ties. She picks the best story tell ers from all the social groups, and there definitely Is no social ice by the second course. A Diplomat, Too That has brought up tangles in protocol the gentle are of seating people according to their rank. Like the party the Roberts gave for Sen. Alben Barkley of Kentucky. Evie wound up by Inviting an ambassa dor, a supreme court justice, and eight senators, in addition to lesser fry. Then she called the state de partment to ask, "How do I seat this gang?" "Yon can't. Call the party off,' said the protocol officer. She gave the party anyway. Seat. ed every one happily. Put the am bassador and the justice at the head table. Then arranged eight other tables, with a senator at the head of each. Sometimes she 'admits that the totally worthy search for excite' ment ends up In jams. That re minds her of one small dinner she and her husband gave. A senator, an ambassador, a judge and their ladles. Demi-tasse time arrived and Evie phoned a friend who has snakes, "Can we come over?" The party- stiff shirts and long dresses pop ped into taxis and arrived at the snake house to see a venomous bushmaster. The tempo . definitely quickened when the bushmaster suddenly lashed out of his cage on' to the floor. well, Evie summed up a cage and looked around. There was ev eryone hanging from other cages never saw a crowd go primitive so fast in my lite," she says, chuck ling. You get the notion that she's quite proud they had sense enough to cnmo. No one was hurt. A Very Good Democrat Evie Is not a charity-committee' woman. But she rode an elephant to open a circus here this year. She had made a deal. If she rode me elepnant, the circus owner promised to send a miniature circus the next day to the children's hos pltal. He did. The Roberts have a small daugh ter of two, Alice Birney, named for Evle's mother who was one of the founders of the Parent-Teach er association. Evie Is a superb horse-woman. So when Alice was 14 months old she got her first riding outfit, and rode around the ring at a horse show with her proud Mama leading tne pony. Alice's arrival was a story. Evle's calendar said "Hospital" for the next day. But friends were going to a night club. So suddenly Evie realized that three days hence would be the President's birthday. She announced, "no baby for three days yet. I'm a good democrat." Doctors protested. 3ut when the baby arrived it was eleven the morning of the President's birth day. Evie chuckled as she opened a big box of red roses sent her by President Roosevelt. In the cor ner was a tiny, tiny bouquet of pink ones marked for "The newest democrat." ' Feature New Desserts In Your Spring Meals March Is a tricky month. Sometimes It comes In like a lamb and goes out like a lion. Sometimes the day set by the calendar makers as the first day of spring Is marked by a cold wintry blizzard. Surer signs that spring Is on the way are to be found right around the family dining tame. Appetites droop. Bored looks and polite "no thank you's" greet the dally fare, when that happens it's time to spring house-clean your menu files and to try something new. A good dessert can do more to pull meals out of the dumps than anything else. Try Rhubarb Crisp. If those falling appetites are due to vitamin and mineral shortages, ims ougnc to nx mem. rne caste alone is as good as a breath of spring. Cream Cheese Pudding Is another gold-star winner. It's a good filler upper when the rest of the meal is light. Made with cream cheese, eggs, butter, milk and cream, it tastes like something the angels might have put together. The recipes for these are as fol lows: Rhubarb Crisp H cup butter or minirini tt cup lunar s mt tetspoon niitmtr 4 teaspoon vanilla extract 14 eupa imall toasted bread cubes 3 cups corn flakfi 4 cupa diced freih rhubarb tt cup sugar Blend butter and tt sup iutsx thor oughly; add emti and beat well. I Roma Wine Compony, Inc., Fresno, Colifornio It New Uses for Junk Jewelry Wondering what to do with all that Junk Jewelry you've been col lecting at random for the past few years? From Hollywood comes a new idea to bring it back from re tirement and put it to work again. Just take the Jewelry apart and at tach one or several gadgets to the zipper on your purse or dress. A celebrated movie star has a zipper pull fashioned of a collection of odd coins, on her pocketbook. Formerly a bracelet, it's causing plenty of favorable comment among the stars. The idea Is especially good for a simple dress that needs an original accent to set it off. Foods Told The other day a young mother said to me: "I am worried about my child. She la so conservative in her food tastes. She Just doesn't like anything new. What Is the matter with her?" There is nothing the matter with her. She Is Just like most other children. In the first months of life children have little sense of taste They like things that are liquid and warm and therefore easy to swal low. Milk has a very bland flavor, and when It is taken supplies what is needed to quench those hunger pangs which come when the stom ach Is empty. Most babies do like the orange Juice which is diluted with water when It Is first given. And they generally like cod liver oil, strange as it may seem to adults. When more solid foods are given there Is often objection registered by the baby, probably on account of the difference In texture, as well as flavor. We find that almost all children like potatoes, but other vegetables must be Introduced by giving a very small amount at first. Strained peas and carrots are gen erally taken more easily than other vegetables. Among the fruits we find mashed bananas, which actually uqueiy, given approval by young epicures. Vegetables and fruits are always strained or mashed at first. Later they may be chopped. Young moth ers find the canned strained and chopped foods most convenient. Recently potato shreds nave come to the market In package form. As they will cook in five minutes, they have oeen welcomed by moth era when potatoes must be cooked especially for the baby's meal. Of course, they were not designed for this purpose, but rather for general consumption, especially when time presses. It Is something to be able to have mashed potatoes read for the table in less than ten minutes. Soft Costard 1 cvs or 4. set yolks, gllghtlr beaten U cup sugar K teaspoon salt 3 cups milk, scalded teaspoon vanilla extract Combine silently beaten saga or eat yolks, susar and salt In top of double Doner. Ana not mux siowir ana sur umu susar Is dissolved. Cook over hot water, stlrrlna constantly. When the custard coats a metal spoon, remove at once from hot water and place pan In cold water to cool quickly. Add vanilla ex extract. Pour over frulu or sponia caks. Yield: about m cups. Not.: If custard cooks too long and eurdlss, beat untU smooth with egg beater. Applesaaoa Wash, quarter and core eight tart cook ing apples and put In saucepan with Just enough water to cover. Cover and cook over low heat about ten minutes until very soft. Rub through coarse strainer. Sweeten to taste and stir until sugar it dissolved. Cinnamon or nutmeg may be added but not for Infanta. Yield: gut servings. Garnishes That Don't Wilt Garnishes used on a hot platter should be the kind that will not be affected by heat. A wilted garnish does not make an attractive dish. Garnishes should be put in place the very last thing, so do not select those requiring much last minute arrangement.
